Spaceteam is an innovative multiplayer game that combines button pushing and shouting in an incredibly entertaining way. In this cooperative game that’s designed to be played with friends or family, players will shout random phrases at each other in order to coordinate the safe operation of a virtual ship.
This is a free game, but each player will need to have an iPad, an iPhone, or an iPod touch in order to play. You will also need to be in the same room, as Spaceteam is meant to be played face to face. The game syncs the devices together using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and then displays a matching set of ship controls on each device.
The game supports up to four players, and when you are all ready to go, all you need to do is open the app. Spaceteam will automatically find the other players who are on the same Wi-Fi network that you are. The game will open with a short tutorial, explaining that you need to work together to follow the ship’s instructions.
From there, you’re presented with a control panel filled with buttons. The panels will be different for each person, with buttons, switches, sliders, and gears that are labeled.
Each person will need to shout out instructions to the other person, so that the proper buttons can be activated in tandem. For example, you might get an instruction that says “Jam Clipbell” which is on your partner’s screen. So you would shout out this instruction, he would push the button, and you would move on to the next command.
Sometimes the instructions are meant to be carried out on your own screen, so you need to keep an eye both on your own commands and the commands that your partner shouts out at you. As the game progresses, it becomes more and more difficult because instructions start flying fast.
The goal is to keep your ship from exploding as long as possible, and if you manage to keep it going for a certain amount of time, you will earn achievements. There are different stages, and it gets continually harder, but it’s always a ton of fun.
The game gets even crazier with four people playing, shouting out commands like “Activate Starflute!” and Increase “Rimwich to 5!” The commands are different each time you play, and it’s always silly technobabble.
Both kids and adults can play this, but because it does get fairly difficult, it’s best suited to older children. If you enjoy cooperative games, you should definitely give Spaceteam a try. It’s a blast!
What I liked: This is the most innovative multiplayer iOS game that I’ve played in a long time. It’s incredibly fun shouting nonsense at other players, and it’s infinitely replayable. You don’t have to purchase the expansion levels, but you will want to.
What I didn’t like: I’d like to see a better graphical interface and a crisper design, but that’s a minor complaint for such an amusing game.
To buy or not to buy: Download this free game and give it a try with a friend or family member. I guarantee you won’t regret it.
