Dream of Pixels is Like Tetris in Reverse – iPad Game Review

I am a huge puzzle game fan, so much so that it’s one of my favorite game genres. I’ve always loved Tetris and other similar games that have come out in the App Store like Cubis Creatures and Slydris, and this week, a game came out that I just had to share with all of you.

Dream of Pixels is a cleverly designed game that plays like Tetris, only in reverse. Instead of placing blocks, you’re removing them to clear the cloud-filled puzzle board.

Not only does this game have innovative gameplay, it also comes with gorgeous graphics. The colors shift and meld into one another, creating a dreamlike field to play on, and appropriate music plays in the background for an immersive puzzle experience.

The game starts in classic mode with a tutorial. You’re given an outline of a block, each one in a different shape, which you must then remove from the solid block-filled board.

You tap to choose where to remove the block from, and drag down to rotate the block to get it to fit where you want. You can only remove blocks that have a clear pathway, which means you are limited to the bottom tier of the puzzle.

There will be single blocks that are left behind as you clear the board. These stragglers will move up each time that you clear a row, so it’s important to make your moves quickly.

When you remove a full line of blocks, you score points. As you remove blocks, they will continually advance downwards, moving more quickly as you level up.

The goal is to play for as long as you can to get the highest score possible. As it turns out, this is incredibly addictive.

When you score enough points, you will unlock the other game modes that accompany classic mode: Puzzle, Pro, Nightmare, and Shattered.

Pro, Nightmare, and Shattered modes are similar to classic, they are simply more difficult and require more skill. For example, in Pro mode you will start at level 9 with blocks moving quickly, and in Nightmare mode, you are timed as you clear the board.

Puzzle mode is a bit different than the other gameplay types. In this mode, you will be given different shapes, and you must figure out how to remove all of the blocks from the board. There’s no timer so you can work at your own pace, and there’s also a quick undo button which makes these puzzles more fun than frustrating.

In addition to the different game modes, Dream of Pixels also offers an array of achievements to earn and several different leaderboards so you can compete with your friends to find out who’s the best at reverse Tetris.

What I liked: Dream of Pixels is fantastically clever, and I would dare to say that it’s an even better gameplay experience than classic Tetris.

What I didn’t like: I had no complaints with this game.

To buy or not to buy: If you enjoy puzzle games, I highly suggest downloading Dream of Pixels.
