Do You Like Netflix’s Latest Application Interface?

Consistent with their “streaming-only” strategy, Netflix announced in January they were dropping the “add to DVD queue” option from all streaming-capable devices. The changes included the iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Blue-ray players and any other Netflix compatible streaming devices you’re using today.

Some of our readers were outraged by the “streaming only” idea. But, have you noticed the sudden change on Netflix’s iPad app interface?

In case you haven’t noticed, Netflix has already changed their application interface. You did not get an application update notification via the App Store, but Netflix did make changes via their own servers. The new interface certainly looks much simpler. But, will Netflix hardcore fans like it?

Netflix’s motivation to change it all was to “concentrate on offering you the titles that are available to watch instantly”, as stated on the company’s blog. They have been focusing mostly on improving the “streaming only” experience. In the new application interface you will no longer find the physical DVD rental option. The interface is certainly a bit quicker and less cluttered.

When you run Netflix’s new interface, you will only find four main categories – Home, Genres, Search, Instant Queue. Keep in mind that if you want to add physical DVDs to your queue, the DVD queue feature is still completely available on the Netflix website, which is available using Safari on your iPad.

Overall, the four main categories give you the ability to find your movies by category, new arrivals, recently watched titles, or recommended Netflix movies. Each of the video titles will be presented with a picture, in which you can click to start your movie or TV show with a single click. In addition, Netflix also provides you with information such as the video title, customer rating, movie rating, year and running time.

The search capabilities are basic, but Netflix provides a good way for you to find movies and TV shows that are readily available for streaming. I liked the way Netflix has implemented search. It’s simple, but a powerful feature that instantly brings other recommendations from Netflix’s catalog.

However, Netflix has removed a few features that will probably upset some hardcore fans. For example, there are no title reviews. In order to get access to other member and critics reviews, you will have to access the Netflix website separately. “Account Settings” is no longer accessible via the mobile app, but fully accessible from Netflix’s website. I can certainly agree with hardcore fans about the removal of video title reviews since it’s a very useful feature.

According to Netflix, most members use the website to manage their physical DVD queue instead of doing it via their mobile app. Based on this, Netflix is certainly focusing on improving the “streaming experience” considering new competition. And perhaps, like it or not, Netflix could probably move away from the DVD shipping business eventually.

Trust me, in my household we use Netflix’s streaming service quite a bit. Now, if Netflix is so focused on the “streaming only” experience, they need to make sure their streaming library grows at a much faster pace while keeping reasonable prices for the vast majority of consumers. That way they can start moving their consumer base more towards streaming.

I would not care if Netflix had a great selection of streaming options. I think it is kind of rediculous for Netflix to remove this feature from their customers, and force them into something that is to the best quality product. It is strictly a manuplitive move, and I think it is going to hurt the company.

  • WAM

I agree, the new interface is a big step backwards!

  • mps

    Big step backwards.

Can’t even find the anime section since it isn’t located under the genre tab anymore.

Way to blow it Netflix. Guess that’s money back in my pocket.

  • Andy

    New interface is terrible…

  • unhappy

They didn’t put all the genre’s in the list that is on the website. The one I look at is not on there and through the old way it was easier to browse movies I normally would never see and watch some pretty interesting films. Doesn’t seem to be as intuitive.

  • Mark

    Hate it.

  • Kamyar

It is awful! I used the reviews section all the time! Whoever thought this was an improvement needs to be reprimanded… Put things back the way they were!!!!!

  • Hate it

Awful. The reviews are a major tool in deciding whether to commit the time to a movie. Without reviews you are committed for 15-20 minutes plus picking another movie, so a min of 1/2 an hour to push a button. Netflix is treating their customers as if the customer’s time is worthless and Netflix time is valuable. The business can die as fast as it started. And it will.

I can understand why they’d want to make the changes they did, but I’m sorry to hear that there are so many people disappointed with it. Being Canadian, I wasn’t subjected to the change in interface but I do have to suffer with a terrible selection, especially compared to its American counterpart.

@Hate it: I host a podcast called Netpix that reviews several films on Watch Instantly, so maybe you can get some inspiration on what to watch from us if you can’t access the reviews you’d like to from your device.

Let’s hope they find a happy medium in the future.

  • RodMAn

Hate it… I thought something was wrong with the app before I realized it had just been “improved” with functionality removed.

  • Hate it too

    Hate it too.

  • Kevin

A step in the wrong direction. Netflix continues to try and spoon feed the titles they would like you to watch. Despite analyzing my viewing history, you can’t reasonably expect you know what I want to watch. Quit limiting what I can easily find. Eliminating user reviews implies we’ll trust yours, which we won’t.

I admire the attempt at improving the streaming experience but at what cost Netflix? There are too many expanding entertainment options to put up with these continuing “upgrades”.

    Patience wearing thin.

  • WAM

I have to wonder if part of it is about hiding the fact that their streaming selection sucks by guiding you to what they do have available….

    • Mr. Reeee

That makes perfect sense. Their streaming selection is dreadful.

  • http://renehasp@gmail.com Rene Hasprunar

I personally hate the new interface, Where is my Netflix Queue! How can I order movies now. SAD!

  • Bill

Netflix is moving backwards not forwards. I hate it. It’s harder to find the selection you want and it makes it harder to add a DVD when the instant viewing option is not available. Now I need two devices to manage my queue.

  • SP

The new interface was definitely not put together with the customer in mind. Why would you strip out 80% of the functionality. Having to launch Netflix.com while I’m using the app is not cool.

  • ButchM

Agreed … the new format is a huge step backwards … the new format will not pick up any movies that were placed in the instant queue placed there using Safari on the iPad … nor can you edit the instant queue … nor are the movies removed from the instant queue once viewed … huge disappointment and downgrade …

  • Spankenstein

This is so stupid….so now instead of forming my que on my primary internet device iPad …I have to take out my laptop plug it in and get online to do something that only took a few seconds…thanks netflix for making the decision to cripple what was a fantastic service and limit my abilities..after all I am paying you a monthly fee …guess I will have to check block buster out again after canceling my services

  • WAM

Could this be related to Apple’s new policy about in-app
    subscriptions/purchase?

Given the two companys’ history as far as arrogance and consumer friendliness, it would seem more likely that Apple is behind this in some way.

    Just a thought.

  • Michael

Hate it. The Genre surfing is missing. Search is bad. Seems like the ability to browse for a movie is gone. I think a huge step backward.

I even yelled at the kids thinking they changed some setting and searched the Net looking for a way to fix it. It’s awful to switch views with no notice.

    #FAIL

  • Mr. Reeee

    HATE

What used to be an extremely functional app now is 2 steps short of useless.

Maybe they miss browser ad clicks, so they crippled the iOS app.

  • Kapeed

    New UI is horrible!!

  • Kaner

Horrible. There used to be a section entitled new to instant streaming. GONE. Reviews? GONE. Manage account? GONE. I am personally thrilled about the move to streamiNg only, but for the love of god, do it right. Oh, did I mention you have to scroll to see everything because the sortable text based lists are, um, GONE!

  • Seth Cohen

I think this has also to do with Apple’s new Terms of Service, which Apple claims entitles them to 30% of Netflix subscriptions. Turning the app into a streaming only client (which, I agree, is a big step backward for me as a Netflix user) saves Netflix from the Apple tax, which would cripple them.

  • Nick

About some of the comments : the “Apple Tax” applies only to customers brought by apple. Therefore it doesn’t apply to the netflix core customer base, acquired by netflix on its own.

  • th

Horrible. I unloaded it and just use the website. You can still watch movies from the web site, plus you can read the descriptions and reviews. The thinking behind this is dumb founded.

  • rob

u better change this or i will get rid of netflix just saves me money

  • Dan

No sub categories? How do I browse tv classic comedies? This really bites.

  • http://www.ericsiegmund.com/fireant/ Eric

I find it interesting that no one seems to have noticed one of the most critical areas where Netflix has crippled the app: only 100 titles are listed in a given genre, meaning that if you’re browsing a genre, you could be missing a significant number of movies. Now, they’re still available, but you have to find them via a search.

I confirmed this in both the SciFi/Fantasy and Independent genres; I haven’t checked the others but assume it’s the case for them. In the SciFi genre, 175 titles are available via the website, but only 100 show up in the app’s Genre list mode. In the Independent genre, the app omits 20 titles in list mode.

I can’t imagine what logic Netflix was employing when it decided app users didn’t really need to see a COMPLETE list of available movies.

    • Robobabybot

I agree! I am really unhappy with the change just an example of how annoying it is when I looked through sci-fi it showed ‘the day the earth stopped’ but not ‘the day the earth stood still’ even though I knew it was there, this of course makes it much more difficult to find titles. I’m actually feeling shortchanged by the service and am considering canceling.

  • Marc

seems like netflix listened to the masses… my app reverted back to the old version. i liked the new version, just wish there was the dvd que. the interface was great. Maybe they can “feature” the streaming que, but still have the dvd que available. We’ll see!

  • Elle

I hate the new version! Netflix, please go back to the old version of the iPad app!

  • mdeiner

    Hate it!

  • dan

    hate it! HATE IT
    F IT
    death

  • marialena bridges

it is appaling that Netflix did not ask their customers what they want in the first place and, given the 100 percent negative feedback on the ” new” version, they don’t just change it back since it should be very clear to them WE DO NOT like the change. Come on, Netflix! I can’t type in a favorite actor and find their movies, I can’t find my viewing history, and a host of other thongs to which I formerly had access. Sometimes too simple equates to not enough. Why did you have to go mess with perfection?

    • http://www.padgadget.com Roberto

      Agreed.

Your point about not being able to search by favorite actor and access your viewing history is a big oversight by Netflix in the latest app interface.

  • Aratamom

Bring back the add to DVD queue!

  • C4views

unbelievable,WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? is there anyway at all to put netflix right on my website? if anyone knows please please email me c4*****@live.com

  • S_kalin10

What are you people thinking? This whole set up is terrible. It’s obvious this company wants to go bankrupt! I kept thinking I was doing something wrong—-actually I’m doing it right-It’s Netflix that’s doing it wrong!!!
