United, Continental Announce Wi-Fi on All Main Flights by 2015

United and ContinentalI’m not sure who will be happier, business travelers looking to get a little extra work done or parents on the move who need to find a way to entertain their children during a flight. Either way, the news is good.

United Continental Holdings, Inc. has announced that they have selected Panasonic Avionics Corporation to make WiFi available on over 300 of their Airbus 319 and 320 and Boeing 747, 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft beginning in mid-2012.

Amazon Releases $199 Kindle Fire Tablet, $79 Kindle

Amazon announced its much anticipated Android-based tablet this morning, and as expected, it resembles a traditional Kindle e-book reader.

The 7” Kindle Fire will retail for a mere $199.99, and it features 8GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi connectivity, an IPS Panel, a dual-core CPU, and a lightweight chassis (14.6 oz). It does not feature a 3G connection, a camera, or a microphone, but it does come with a 30 day trial of Amazon Prime, to tempt customers into purchasing digital TV shows and movies. Amazon is selling the Kindle Fire at a loss, and hopes to compensate for the lost money with digital purchases.

Pay As You Go MiFi Available from TruConnect

Several mobile carriers offer MiFi mobile hotspots, but they require hefty monthly fees along with a two-year contract to get the hardware at a reasonable price.

TruConnect’s new 3G MiFi, priced at $90, aims to avoid contracts entirely. The service, which uses Sprint’s 3G network, uses a pricing model based on bandwidth consumed, rather than tiered data plans that provide a predetermined amount of data per month, usually between 250 MB to 5GB.

RIM Rumored to Discontinue WiFi PlayBook, Lower than Expected Sales

Barely three months after the launch of its BlackBerry PlayBook, RIM is rumored to be about to discontinue the currently available WiFi-only models, possibly due to lower than expected sales. While the tablet fared better than other devices such as the Motorola Xoom, with at least half a million devices shipped thus far, the PlayBook sales figures are still dwarfed by the iPad’s.

As a result, RIM is allegedly focusing on upcoming – and potentially more popular – 3G-enabled models.

Seagate Reveals “GoFlex Satellite” for Cable-Free iOS Streaming

An interesting FCC filing has revealed Seagate’s plans to build a hard drive that would bring us built-in WiFi capability and will also feature its own battery to operate cable-free for several hours.

The Seagate GoFlex Satellite is a portable hard drive that will allow you to stream music, videos and other content directly to your iOS devices by leveraging a companion app called GoFlex Media.

Apple Un-Squashes WiFi Bug

The recent release of iOS 4.3.3 has resulted in the reappearance of an old bug that Apple had previously fixed. This bug, first seen about a year ago, caused iPads to have weak, constantly fluctuating or non-existent WiFi signals.

These connectivity problems are no longer limited to just the iPad either. Both iPod and iPhone devices have reported having the same issues. The exact manifestation of the problems with each device seems to vary.

According to the Cisco’s new Visual Networking Index: Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, 2010-2015, tablet data usage is increasing dramatically and has the potential to overwhelm most wireless networks.  Cisco’s report presents projections and growth trends for global mobile data across a variety of mobile devices around the globe.

While it may be expected that smartphone data usage increased significantly in 2010, this is one of the first measures of tablet data use since they hit the market in 2010.

iPad 2′s Built-in Mic Exhibits Quality Differences

If you’ve been paying attention to the iPad 2 news you already know that there are several differences between the various iPad 2 models (WiFi, GSM / AT&T, CDMA / Verizon).  But, did you know that not all iPad 2s are equal when it comes to audio quality?

D-Link Releases WiFi Camera with Night Vision for iPad and iPhone

Network equipment maker D-Link just took the wraps off of their latest WiFi network camera with all new support for the Apple iPad.  The Day/Night Wireless N Camera (DCS-932L) is built on the company’s previously released WiFi enabled network camera but adds night Infrared (IR) lighting to viewing objects up to a distance of 16 feet.

The DCS-932L supports 802.11 n and can stream motion JPEG video at 20 frames per second.  The camera easily connects to a WiFi network thanks to its support for WiFI Protected Setup (WPS).  Once the camera is connected to your WiFi network, you can easily connect to the camera by using the browser on your computer.
