Time Inc., Apple Offer Free iPad Access to Print Magazine Subscribers

The story between Apple and Time Inc. started a bit rough last year when both companies were battling over iPad magazine subscriptions. Time has always been trying to roll-out a subscription program for its Sports Illustrated, Fortune and Time magazines, but Apple prevented the New-York based company from moving forward by implementing its own iTunes subscriptions plan.

However, after months of negotiations and debates, Time Inc. has finally agreed with Apple to allow print magazine subscribers to access the company’s iPad editions for free.

People Magazines’s iPad App Free to Subscribers of Print Version

If you had a subscription for People magazine’s print version and also wanted the magazine’s app to browse on your iPad, you were simply out of luck, unless you paid an additional charge to download the app.  According to Fortune, that all changed when the new issue of People was released today.

Even before the launch of the iPad, Steve Jobs encouraged magazine publishers to create apps for the new Apple device.   Many publishers were prepared to make the magazine apps free for subscribers, but much to their dismay, things did not go exactly as planned.  It has taken four and a half months for Time Inc. to receive Apple’s seal of approval.

This week’s release of People marks a shift in the tide and Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune are expected to follow suit in the next 30 days.  Not only is this change good for Time Inc.’s magazine lineup, but other magazine titles as well.  We assume Apple will agree to the same conditions with other magazine publishers soon too.

This change is certainly a step in the right direction for publishers and will hopefully lead to additional concessions, like the ability to sell subscriptions through the App Store.

Fortune Magazine for iPad Now Available

Time Inc. just released its new digital magazine, Fortune Magazine.

Like the paper version of the magazine, the app is focused on business and the economy. But the iPad version also offers nice add-ons like videos, interactive charts and live market news and data.

The app includes a free sample magazine, and additional issues will cost you $4.99 each. Note that the app does not offer any subscription program yet, since Apple and Time recently clashed over iPad magazine subscription plans, and haven’t come to an agreement yet.

Jungle Coins for iPad – App Review

Counting money is an important skill children need to learn and Jungle Coins for the iPad will help them do just that.  If you’ve been following along on PadGadget for a while, you’ll remember I covered Jungle Time and Jungle Fractions by developer Andrew Short last month.  Both of those are great educational apps for kids and he has since added another noteworthy title to his list with Jungle Coins.

Building on the jungle theme, Jungle Coins interactively teaches kids about identifying, counting and computing with coins.  The large display, brightly colored graphics, fun animals and different categories will engage your child through play and help them learn.

There are four different money categories for kids to cover:  Find, Count, Compare and Correct Change.  When you start Jungle Coins, the app begins in Find asking kids to identify specific coins by dragging them from one side of the screen to the other. Complete the task and tap “Done”.  If it’s correct, you’ll receive a green check and a smiley face from your animal, if not, you’ll see a sad face and an “X” instead.  Try another problem in the same category by shaking the iPad or tapping “Shake” or move on to a different category by selecting one of the choices at the bottom of the screen.

Remaining categories include:

  • Count – displays different coins and lets kids enter the correct amount using the number wheel.
  • Compare – provides two sets of coins on either side of a line and asks kids to determine whether the coins are < (less than), = (equal) or > (greater than).
  • Correct Change – gives kids a story problem requiring them to provide change.
