Superbowl is Going Online, and on iOS

Speaking of bringing the NFL into the 21st century, The NFL has finally agreed to remove the longstanding blockade on streaming the big game. In years past, football fans have gathered with family, friends, chips, and dips to watch two teams do battle for the coveted Lombardi trophy.

Now however, it would seem that we may be huddling around our smartphones rather than the big screen. The NFL and broadcasters have been wary of making the move to the online realm for a couple of reasons, number one being the controversial (really?) topic of money.

It is also expected that this new service will be tightly integrated with Google+, allowing users of the social media system to recommend and share music with their friends who would then in turn be able to listen to the track once before deciding whether to make a purchase.

Cinemax App Approved by Apple Despite ‘Adult’ Content

Max GoDespite speculation it may not happen, Apple has approved the addition of the MAX GO app to the iTunes App Store. Max Go is a video streaming service being offered by Cinemax, coming at no additional charge with your existing subscription.

The company advertises having over 400 movies from the Hollywood hit lists as well as indie titles and the Max After Dark series. It is this After Dark series that is causing all of the controversy, because many feel the movies shown in this category qualify as soft-core pornography, which could violate Apple’s strict policy of denying adult content in their store.

iOS Devices Are Streaming 80% of Mobile Video

While most video viewing still occurs over wired connections, there is no question that there is a large number of consumers streaming video to their mobile, wireless devices. FreeWheel, a monetization start-up, has released a report for the first quarter of 2011 that explores the delivery of digital content.

Their report indicated that the delivery of mobile video was made overwhelmingly to Apple iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPod and iPad. This majority, currently sitting at 80% may be due in large part to the number of these devices in the hands of consumers, but it is still a very interesting result. For developers it means tailoring and optimizing content to be viewed on these devices being seen as a priority.

Pocket Hipster HD: Dry Wit and a Mixtape To Go – iPad App Review

Hipsters are a socio-cultural demographic group that is almost too easy to mock. Pocket Hipster HD uses the much maligned hipster as the basis for an iPad app with an attitude and smashing musical sensibilities. Hunted Media, creators of We Are Hunted, (a music discovery website similar to the sixtyone) recently updated its Pocket Hipster app, so it works natively on the iPad.

As the app opens, a frame filled with Pantone 239 lifts, and the user encounters an animated Hipster who starts a one-sided conversation. Meet Sebastian Fowler who offers that he is “thinking of getting a tattoo with the word “Helvetica” on the chest, but using Arial as the font. It’s ironic, obviously” Tapping on the music note in the lower right causes the hipster to pretend to grab your phone, play a snippet from your music library, and the offer a snarky put-down, such as your musical taste is “like a pigeon with a gammy leg.” The app then generates a playlist of 20 songs that the user can stream, favorite, or purchase. The playlists have the feel of a good, old-fashioned mixtape, that mix the familiar with a range of odd-ball covers and lesser-known acts.

Amazon Cloud Player Begins Working On iOS Devices

In March, 2011, Amazon announced the release of their Cloud Drive service, allowing you to upload and store your digital music, photos, videos and documents and making them available for you via any computer with a web browser. While most people have agreed that this is an excellent service, the iOS population was left out during the initial release.

Initial speculation was that Amazon required the use of Flash, which is of course unsupported in iOS, but further testing proved that this wasn’t the case. Some unknown force appeared to be preventing mobile Safari from accessing the service.
