NFLWe see the potential. Apple sees the potential. So why is it that professional sports seem to be lagging so far behind in seeing the potential improvements technology could bring to their games?

Above everything else, professional sports are a business. They exist to make money and bring attention, and they do it well. But like any business there is also a bottom line to adhere to and this means moving forward and making use of the tools we are able to.

So why aren’t they?

SummitX SnowboardingWith the distinct lack of snow falling in my neck of the woods so far this season, the closest thing many of us have to hitting the slopes is playing SummitX Snowboarding.

Stinger Foosball LeagueStinger Games has attempted to bridge the gap between gaming consoles and iOS gaming by bringing the 3D graphical experience to your iPad and iPhone. Most of us have played Foosball at least a few times in our lives, usually badly and after a few drinks which is why playing this new Stinger Foosball League game brings a smile to my face as I remember my university days.

This game is just as addictive and enjoyably infuriating as the actual table-game is!

Are iPads and other Gadgets Impacting Professional Sports?

Bart ScottNew York Jets linebacker Bart Scott took it upon himself last week to accuse sports fans of being distracted by their tech-toys. His opinion is that players on the field are competing with the gadgets fans have in their hands, even when they are sitting in the stands watching the game live.

The mistake he might be making is in assuming the fans are less engaged because they aren’t focused entirely on the field (ice, court, etc.) below. In reality, I believe that tablets and smartphones behave as an extension of the sports-fan experience. Fans in the stadium may be tweeting to their followers and bragging that they are at the game, reporting scores and plays as they happen to interested FaceBook friends, watching replays of game happenings they couldn’t quite see very well or even communicating the kinds of details that news agencies may not find worthy or interesting enough to report.

NBC Sports Talk for iPad

Every Sunday we witness the same behavior on our iPad App Tracker, sports apps shoot up our Hot List and football apps like CBS Sports Pro Football by CBS Interactive and Backbreaker Football by NaturalMotion usually make it to the Top 5 Hot Apps list. So with this weekly trend, it comes as no surprise to see the latest iPad app from NBC Sports shoot up the charts today.

NBC Sports Talk for iPad is NBC’s latest iPad app and was launched just this past Wednesday.  The app is very simple in design but that’s exactly what makes the app so quick and easy to use.  NBC Sports Talk for iPad aggregates multiple news feeds from NBC Sports into one single window where pictures represent various news stories.  The stories run the gamut from headline news like the Cowboys firing their head coach to rumors on where Randy Moss might land next.

Washington Wizards use iPads

The Washington Wizards made team history this week by kicking off their training camp this Tuesday at midnight.  They also made NBA history by becoming the first basketball team in the league to scrap their paper playbook in favor of brand new iPads.

Team owner Ted Leonsis is a high-tech wizard and made his millions during his time as a corporate executive with AOL in 90s so he encourages the team to try new things.  Wizards Coach Flip Saunders had already introduced the team to interactive playbooks  last summer when he provided all the players with an iPod Touch loaded up with all the team’s plays.  This season, Saunders is taking it a step further and has moved the 250 page playbook to iPads and is also including video edits from the team’s games.

MLB’s iPad App Hits the 100,000 Buyers Mark

We’re heading into the last stretch of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) season for 2010. And, MLB has brought plenty of live games to the fans via their fantastic multi-media At Bat app. Needless to say, the games and all interactive features have been a great experience for everyone.

What’s even more impressive, is that MLB has the numbers to back it up as well. The At Bat app has been downloaded 100,000 times. Based on MLB Advance Media statistics, on average, about 40,000 people use the app on a daily basis. From those daily users, 25% watch live games.

The MLB At Bat app is not a cheap download. It costs $14.99. In addition, subscribers that want to get access to a complete schedule of MLB live games would need a MLB.TV subscription. So, if we do a quick math and round-up to $15 per download, that’s over $1 million in revenue (after Apple’s 30% cut) generated by MLB’s iPad app.

I think we continue to see evidence that many folks are getting hungrier when it comes to consuming media and all kinds of content via the iPad. This is only the beginning!

Unleash Your Creativity with Ideate

The iPad helps promote lots of ideas across different market segments. One that comes to mind is sketching. Think of it, a sketching app can help people collaborate and bring new ideas to life. Sketching is often an overlooked component in the creative process, especially where any sort of design is concerned. This is exactly what EffectiveUI set out to resolve with their iPad app called Ideate. This is one of the first apps created specifically for your iPad.

The app reproduces sketching in a way that is simple, intuitive and engaging to give as good an experience as possible without a physical pen and paper. The app comes with a large number of starting background objects, called Templates. It also provides a large number of UI-related backgrounds, including a variety of grids and monitor resolutions.
