The iPad and an Angry Bird Head to Space

Angry Birds in SpaceEverybody’s favorite red-feathered Angry Birds celebrity is boldly going where few men and women have gone before. The next unmanned resupply vehicle headed for the International Space Station next month will be loaded with much needed propellant, oxygen, water, thousands of pounds of crew equipment and 2 iPads all ready to entertain the Russians who will receive them.

In addition to the iPads themselves, a stuffed Angry Bird toy will be sent along as well –though the purpose is to signal weightlessness (also called a zero-g indicator) and not give the waiting astronauts something to cuddle at night. That side-benefit is purely optional.

Relive BrickBreaker Nostalgia with Anodia – iPad Game Review

AnodiaIf you are like me and old enough to date your gaming background backward by decades, there is no question you will remember BrickBreaker. It was an addictive game where you were ‘the paddle’ and your goal was to keep the on-screen ball alive by not letting it fall off screen. Beyond that, you needed your ball to hit each of the bricks sitting in a pattern at the top of the playing field. When one was hit, it disappeared. When the field was clear, you won!

The first few levels let you get your gaming legs and can be completed fairly easily, but each subsequent level is much harder.

Zeke in Orbit HD – iPad Game Review

Zeke in Orbit HDZeke in Orbit HD is a new take on the classic physics-puzzle style games that have been done to death for the iPad. The premise is very simple: Zeke has been launched into space and requires your help in order to get home.

To bring Zeke home, you need to pull him through space using various gravity nodes that act almost like magnets. This would be a very easy task if it wasn’t for all of the obstacles in the way between Zeke and his exit point for each level.

There is no telling when this game will skyrocket back to full price again, so get it while you can.

Warpgate is a gamer’s game. It is not for the casual player. The tutorial alone will take an hour to go through, and although you may be the kind of person that likes to figure out the controls by yourself, you really do need the tutorial for at least some of the actions.

Does the iPad Work in Zero Gravity?

One of the iPad’s best features is its ability to instantly recognize if the screen is oriented in portrait or landscape mode.  To help the iPad figure out which way it’s pointed, it relies on a built in three axes linear accelerometer which measures the direction and speed of how the iPad is being tilted.

This all works great on Earth, but what happens if you’re about to go off on the Space Shuttle to spend some time on the International Space Station? Will your iPad still work?  It seems that this was a burning question for the folks at the Swiss Television show “Einstein” so they took their new iPad up for a zero G ride to see how the accelerometer features would work. Turns out the iPad is not made for space travel.  Check out the video for the full story.
