Aperture on the iPad or any iOS device has been simply wishful thinking for most professional photographers, including some of us amateurs that like to take pictures and refine images to showcase our personal photography style.

However, according to the latest patent granted to Apple, professional photographers may finally get their wish granted. The patent indicates that Apple is probably bringing a version of Aperture to touch screen devices, which could include the iPad.

FX Photo Studio HD Inspires the Photo Artist Within You

When it comes to photo processing apps there are certainly a lot of choices in the App Store, but FX Photo Studio HD stands out as being high-quality and easy to use. Within moments, I had loaded a photo from my gallery and was applying effects and customizing them with ease.

You can certainly play it safe and stay with the utility effects like flipping, cropping and resizing but half the fun is using the over 187 effects and filters to customize your image. If you find an effect you particularly enjoy, save it to your favorites list so you can make additional photos in the same style.

Album App – iPad App Review

If you are looking for an easy way to create photo albums on your iPad, then Album App might be the app for you. Album App allows users to create photo albums using pictures from the iPad camera roll, Flickr, or facebook.

After uploading photos, creating an album takes just one touch. Album App’s photo editing capabilities, however, are very basic. For example, there is no way to remove red eye, so photos should be cropped and retouched before uploading them to Album App. The program does allow users to change the size of photos, as well as angle them, and layer them. I found using the touch screen to re-size the photos in Album App rather imprecise. Album App’s real strength is its photo layout capabilities. Are there any other former high school yearbook editors out there? If so you all will appreciate how fun it is to add up to four photos onto one album page, in a variety of attractive configurations.

Scott Kelby’s Photo Recipes iPad App Teaches Photography

If you’re a regular here at PadGadget, you know I’m a bit of a shutterbug. I started shooting in high school and learned how to develop and print my own B&W, Color Positive (Ciba Chrome -Slides) and Color Negatives from a great set of teachers.  In college I was lucky enough to be friends with a pair of fresh new fashion photographers that did work for a number fashion sites including Vogue. These guys were good friends and I learned a lot from them about photography and the essentials of the trade such as composition and lighting. Unfortunately most of us don’t have friends professionally trained in photography to help us hone our picture taking skills.  But don’t worry, if you own an iPad you can now use Scott Kelby’s Photo Recipes Live: Behind the Scenes: Your Guide to Today’s Most Popular Lighting Techniques to learn great photo techniques from a professional.

Best selling author Scott Kelby, has taken “Photo Recipes”  from his The Digital Photography Book, and turned them into a powerful teach app for the iPad.  The app is a whopper, weighing in at over 1.2GB in size, it is chock-full of over two hours of useful video tutorials spread over 16 different chapters.  The chapters cover a range of photography topics including shooting portraits, landscapes, product shots, food, flowers, etc. Each chapter teaches you how to get that professional look by using the right gear, camera placement and the proper lighting for your photographs.

In the app, Kelby takes you behind the scenes and shows you how photographers put together those “special” shots you see in magazines.  The step-by-step guide shows you how to recreate the look and gives you tips on dealing with scenes in various indoor, outdoor and studio lighting conditions.

Tiffen’s Photo fx Ultra for iPad – App Review

If you’re a photography enthusiast, there’s a good chance you have used a glass filter or other accessory from Tiffen. Tiffen has been in the photography business for over 70 years and is well known for their creative camera filters and more recently for their powerful digital filters. I have had Tiffen filters on my Nikon and Canon glass for over 20 years and have always been happy with the variety and quality of their filters.

Tiffen made the jump to digital years ago with their Dfx product set and introduced a large number of digital filters for the PC and Mac. Tiffen has taken these great Dfx filters and integrated them into their new Photo fx Ultra iPad application. This isn’t Tiffen’s first iOS app, they previously released Photo fx and Cool fx for the iPhone and their iPad app builds on this success. The iPad app is simply stunning.

Photo fx Ultra takes full advantage of the iPad’s larger display and touch screen capabilities. When you start the app, you can pull-up any photo from your iPad’s Photo Library and get to work applying creative filters and effects. Photo fx Ultra can handle photo’s up to 2048 x 1360 which is perfect for online use or smaller prints up to 5” x 7”. (Update: version 1.0.1 now supports resolutions up to 3072 pixels)

Color Splash for iPad – App Review

Although I’m not a professional photographer, I’m a mom who takes lots of pictures throughout the year.  I often manipulate the photos I’ve taken and was immediately interested in the Color Splash for iPad app when I saw it listed as one of the top paid apps and in the New and Noteworthy section on iTunes.

Color Splash for iPad is an awesome app that allows you to create dramatic effects without much effort.  I began the app by watching the in-app tutorial.  Color Splash is not complicated to use, but I found the tutorial informative and a must for first time users. Watch it and within a matter of minutes, you’ll be creating stunning photos to share with family and friends.

First, upload photos to your iPad using iTunes and then launch Color Splash.  After watching the tutorial, select Images to choose a photo and get started.  Your photo is converted to black and white and appears on the screen with the Color tab selected at the top of the screen.  Next, begin adding color back into the picture by “painting” with your finger. Color Splash incorporates a number of features which allow the user to easily manipulate their photo, some of which include: adjusting brush size and intensity, undoing accidental brush strokes and pinching to zoom in and out in a photo to ease coloring.  Continue painting until you’ve created just the right amount of “Wow!” effect in your your photo.
