Financial Times App Coming to iPad

The Financial Times (FT) iPad app is slated for release in May. From what we’ve seen the app looks a lot like the newspaper. For all readers out there, Financial Times will offer an ad-sponsored iPad app for free for two months. They plan to move towards a subscription model, charging $3.59 per week, which is very close to the price for a FT.com subscription.

I’ve always liked the Financial Times coverage. They cover business topics and trends in a very elegant way. I’ve actually had the chance to play with FT.com on my iPad. I’ve not been able to play much video from the site yet. However, the articles, charts and graphs look very good, and it does bring some nice interactive features.

Expect the iPad app to bring a lot of interactive features, articles swiping on to the screen amongst other things. It will be as good an experience as other newspapers that have already made the jump to the iPad.

USA Today Moves to Subscription Model

USA Today’s CEO, Craig Dubow, told investors today that they would switch their free iPad app to a subscription based pricing model in July.  Currently iPad owner’s can download the USA Today app for free from Apple’s App Store.

USA Today has an exclusve sponsorship deal with Courtyard by Marriott which currently allows them to offer the app and content for free.  This will come to an end once the sponsorship deal is over in July.

During the Q1 earnings call, Dubow went on to say the USA Today app had been downloaded over 175,000 times, the app is currently one of the top 10 free iPad apps available in the App Store.

No word yet on the what the new iPad pricing will look like after the partnership with Courtyard by Marriott ends.

Newspaper and Magazine Apps Review

Yesterday, we posted an article about web video sites you can enjoy on your iPad. Today, let’s focus on a few great apps that will bring you an enhanced experience when reading your favorite magazines and newspapers.

Many will debate about whether or not bringing a newspaper or a magazine online will increase its following. What we cannot ignore is the fact that a whole generation has grown up completely ignoring printed material. Perhaps, the main reasons could be the new generation spends countless hours online reading news, looking for sports updates, socially engaging with others, or simply checking out cool websites and blogs. The trend suggests this new generation is not trained to read a paper at all. With the iPad release many magazines and newspapers started thinking outside the box.

Reading newspapers and magazines on the iPad is unlike any other media consumption experience. With the iPad color screen, it is more about the context in which the stories are presented than the articles themselves. It is then, when it all becomes about the apps offered to you. We wanted to share a list of iPad apps that best represent how media companies bring you a refreshing experience.

BuzzVoice joins the iPad

BuzzVoice is coming to an iPad near you. Tuaw reported the move to the iPad and the advantages of the new app compared to previous versions for the iPhone and iPod Touch. As reported by Tuaw the BuzzVoice iPad app still currently under testing.

For those of you not familiar with BuzzVoice, is an app that reads you stories from over 1,500 blogs and plays them back in various ways. The actual playback sound is pretty cool and sounds very natural allowing you to choose a male or female voice, or both. There are many times I come home after work so tired from being in front of my computer that I wish someone would just whisper into my ears the latest stories of the day. Well, I think BuzzVoice can simply be my personal talking reader. You can even create a personalized Playlist or BuzzCast.

Your Playlist can be built by choosing the sources that you are most interested in, and they will show up in your app categorized. A BuzzCast (as reported by Tuaw this feature is still only available through the web site) is a bit different. The BuzzCast is an app generated podcast. You pretty much select your content and each day it will appear in your iTunes library allowing you to hear it.

ACU – First Student Newspaper to Publish on the iPad

Abilene Christian University’s student run media staff recently announced plans to publish its newspaper, The Optimist, for Apple’s new iPad.  They already have a version of their student newspaper for the iPhone and plan to release the iPad version this spring.

“We pay close attention to the way young people consume news,” says ACU’s Kenneth Pybus, faculty adviser of The Optimist.  ”They tend to use all the tools at their disposal to get information.  With the new iPad, we definitely foresee the potential for an explosion in news consumption.”

USA Today Readies iPad App

USA Today announced their plans to have software ready to support the iPad.  From what we’ve seen they’re the first to publicly disclose plans to make its content available on the gadget.  There are plenty of other papers that will certainly come on board. Who can miss this opportunity!  And we’ve heard bits and pieces, including The New York Times that reportedly are already working their own iPad apps.

USA Today (earlier this month) already showed participants attending the 2010 E-reader Symposium at the University of Missouri in Columbia a demonstration of what the paper will look like on the iPad.

USA Today’s deputy managing editor of design, Chuck Rose, said developing an app for the gadget has been a fast-moving project for the paper. “When Steve Jobs made the iPad announcement, [USA Today Publisher David Hunke] said we want to be in the store on the day of launch,” Rose said.

From what we’ve investigated USA Today has worked with Mercury Intermedia to develop the software, the same company that helped the paper put together software for iPhone users.

Stay tuned.  PadGadget will report our findings once we get our hands on this app.

Digital Comics Just got a Whole Lot Bigger!

When we look at the iPad we’re always looking for apps that catch our attention very quickly.  And comics apps fit that profile.  I’m a comics fan and when Panelfly launched their iPhone/iPod Touch app to me they created a WOW factor.  Their patent pending narrative navigation engine simply created a real cool user experience. We can certainly debate whether or not reading comics on the iPhone’s small screen becomes tedious.  You have to keep scrolling and zooming in and out just to read the speech balloons, and sometimes the small display can become a bit challenging to showcase full-page art.

Now, with the advantage of the iPad’s much larger screen, digital comics will become a great experience.   So imagine your favorite comic book or graphic novel on a gorgeous 9.7-inch LED backlit display.  It will look simply fantastic. Perhaps one small issue could be that publishers will need to reformat their comics to fit in the new screen size, but that simply will not be a problem.  And if you can rotate them, or view two pages at once, that will be even better.

Looking for a bigger experience?  Well, that is what Panelfly intends to do with their upcoming optimized version of the popular comic book reader for the iPad.  With a new library, new store & a new reading experience we believe Panelfly will raise the bar on digital comics.

Stay tuned for more reviews on Panelfly and their upcoming comic book reader.
