Acer CEO Says Public Will Regain Senses and Stop Buying iPad

During a recent convention in Taiwan, Acer Group CEO JT Wang said that he is not concerned by the competitive threat of the iPad on his business. Wang said that the rumors of the iPad hurting netbook sales are overblown and that Acer has not seen an impact on netbook demand except for in the US and the UK.

Wang’s comments come on the heels of Apple CEO Steve Jobs saying that “it’s not a question of if, but when” the iPad will impact netbook sales.  Acer is one of the world’s largest producers of netbooks and has seen increased competition not only from tablets like the iPad but also from other netbook manufactures that are driving down prices.

iPad Web Usage More Like PC Than Smartphone

Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker updated her “Internet Trends for 2010“, during this year’s CM Summit in New York, and as usual it was packed with some great statistics. Meeker’s main message was the unprecedented growth of mobile Internet usage and how Apple is helping to define it.

The US is currently the leader in mobile usage, taking the lead from Japan, with the number of US mobile web and app users doubling within the past year. Meeker estimates that in 2011, smartphone sales will exceed feature phone for the first time in the US and points to an inflection point for 3G and mobile Internet usage.

Apple has the largest mobile app base, with roughly 86 million iPhone and iPod Touch users, and 10 times the number of app downloads compared to their closet rival.  The number of apps available for the iPad already exceeds the number available in the Palm, RIM and Nokia app stores. The iPad took only 28 days to reach one million units sold which is exceeded only by Nintendo’s Wii and DS gaming platforms.

Steve Jobs positioned iPad as a third class of device that fits between a laptop and a smartphone, and based on Meeker’s data, this seems to be the case.  Meeker looked at Internet usage across a range of smartphone and PC based devices and found that Internet usage on the iPad sits distinctly in the middle of the two groups.

iPad Eats into Netbook Sales

Seems that Apple is taking a bite out of netbook sales according to a new Fortune article.  Fortune’s Elmer DeWitt discovered an interesting chart from Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty which showed a significant drop in netbook sales coinciding with the launch of Apple’s iPad.

According to the report, netbook sales had been growing rapidly in 2009 and peaked last summer at an “astonishing 641% year-over-year growth rate.” After the iPad was announced this January, the growth rate plummeted to only 68%, still a healthy number but an amazing drop in such as short time.  These numbers continued to fall as we approached the iPad’s launch date.  Sales dropped to 53% in February, 25% in March and currently stands at only 5% for April. According to the article, the numbers are “collateral damage, according to Huberty, from the January introduction and April launch of the iPad.”
