iPad “Drawing Pad” App for Kids

One of the things I enjoy about mobile devices is the entertainment value. My family uses iPhones and iPods regularly to play games and watch movies while driving in the car, during volleyball practice and waiting in doctor’s offices. Now we have the iPad to add to our list.

Shortly before the iPad launch, I was contacted by Darren Murtha about an app called “Drawing Pad.” He sent me some info and a link to a YouTube demo video. I knew immediately that my kids would love playing with an app like “Drawing Pad,” but I was curious to see how well it actually worked. We downloaded the app on Sunday and spent quite a bit of time playing with it. Following is my review:

Protect Their Little Ears

Remember the 80′s when you got your first walkman?  And then when you got one that would auto-reverse the tape?  Wow, what a technological breakthrough!  I clearly remember my parents telling my brother and me to turn our walkmen down as we rocked to U2 in the backseat of our car.

Now, fast forward 25 years and we’re saying the same thing our parents did.  Although the devices have changed, the concern parents have about volume has not.

Another Reason To Go To College – An iPad

How cool is this?  It almost makes me want to return to my college days!

Steven Sande at TUAW reports that Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA plans to provide all full-time students with an iPad, starting with the 2010 Fall semester, as part of the Seton Hill Griffin Technology Advantage Program.

Good for them!  Preparing for college is crazy enough without worrying about what type of computer equipment to purchase and send with your student.  As a parent, I think this is a fantastic idea.  Seton Hill not only provides your college student with the hardware they require for their classes, but they also give parents one less thing to worry about.

10 Day iPad Countdown – #6

Editor’s note: In anticipation of Apple’s April 3rd iPad launch, we’re reviewing our top 10 must-have iPad gear.  Each day leading up to April 3rd, we’ll cover one new app or accessory for the iPad.  Be sure to let us know what your top 10 iPad items are by leaving us a comment below.

#6

Admit it ladies.  Most of us already own a handbag large enough to carry an iPad, plus the 10 pounds of useless junk we normally lug around.  For those of us that fall into that category, a protective case/sleeve becomes a necessity before we drop our iPad into that bottomless pit we call a purse.

Several products have caught my eye recently, to include Belkin’s Vue Sleeve, Be.ez’s LA robe iPad Allure and the Pink Mivizu neoprene cover case.  However, I think Hard Candy’s Sleek Skin iPad case fits the bill when it comes to protecting your iPad and fitting nicely into your bag.  It also comes in five great color choices.  (Don’t worry guys, this case is available in colors you can use too.)

Why I Need an iPad

There have been countless articles written recently about Apple’s April 3rd release of the iPad and many of them include predictions about the fate of the product, who will use it and the impact it will have on communications in general.

Among the predictions, are those saying women will make up a large percentage of iPad users.  Like myself, many women are wondering how to use the iPad in their daily lives.  Well, the more I read about the iPad, the more ideas I come up with to justify my purchase.

Why My Mom’s Next Computer Will Be An iPad

TechCrunch posted an article the end of January titled “Why My Mom’s Next Computer Will Be An iPad.”  It was written by guest writer, Ethan Nicholas, developer of the iPhone games iShoot and Kim Rhode’s Outdoor Shooting. In his article, Nicholas states the “iPad is a computer for people who don’t like computers” and uses his sixty-something year old mother as an example.   She is clearly “not computer savvy” and constantly having problems with her system for one reason or another.  Well, there are lots of users out there in the same boat.

The iPad might not be the perfect device for many hard core tech weenies, however, it will find a niche with people just like Nicholas’ mom.  These users want a system that allows them to email, read books and watch movies, without the worry of daily software installs, uninstalls and updates or gadgets that slow their computers to a crawl.  Most users want an easy uncomplicated computing experience and many out there hope Apple offers it with the iPad.

The fate of the iPad is still unknown, but Nicholas predicts “for non-computer geeks everywhere, the iPad is going to redefine computing.”
