NPR – A Finger’s Touch Away

National Public Radio (NPR) announced Monday it will be the latest media participant to jump on the iPad bandwagon.  Designers and developers at NPR are currently busy retooling their website to take advantage of the iPad’s unique new platform.  According to Kensey Wilson, Senior VP and General Manager of NPR Digital Media, they have already “modified the navigation and made the site more ‘touch’ friendly.”  At the same time, they are creating an iPad app to feature public radio streams and on-demand programming from around the country.

The revamping of NPR’s current website and creation of an iPad app will position NPR as a media frontrunner early in the game, while also allowing dedicated NPR listeners to experience popular shows such as Car Talk, The Prairie Home Companion and All Things Considered with the touch of a finger.

Get Ready to Rock and Roll with iPad!

The iPad without a doubt will bring you a fun experience all the time. The most recent cool app announced yesterday allows you to stay close to your favorite rock band(s). Digital media company Neutrinos announced the development of Rock Show, a pretty cool iPad app which enables you to experience artwork from limited edition concert posters.

The Rock Show app will allow you to discover more about performing artists via quick links to both Wikipedia and the iTunes store. All concert posters featured in Rock Show are available for purchase directly through the app. In most cases the posters will be shipped to you by the artist or design studio that originally created them. This makes it quite easy for us since we expect iTunes will build quite a large selection.

If you want to get on board stay tuned. The Rock Show app will be available as a free download from the iTunes iPad App Store very soon.

iPad Will Have Access to Over One Million Titles

Barnes & Noble announced Thursday that it will add a new B&N eReader to its list of free eReader software for desktop and mobile devices. This new eReader, designed specifically for the iPad, will offer iPad users access to over one million eBooks, magazines and newspapers in the Barnes & Noble eBookstore.

The addition of the iPad eReader lets Barnes & Noble continue to “fulfill our promise of providing consumers any book, any time, any where.” Expect the iPad eReader to be released around the same time as the iPad.

It will be interesting to see how the competition between the different eReaders (Kindle, nook and iPad) and eBook stores (Amazon, Barnes & Noble and iTunes) plays out.

ACU – First Student Newspaper to Publish on the iPad

Abilene Christian University’s student run media staff recently announced plans to publish its newspaper, The Optimist, for Apple’s new iPad.  They already have a version of their student newspaper for the iPhone and plan to release the iPad version this spring.

“We pay close attention to the way young people consume news,” says ACU’s Kenneth Pybus, faculty adviser of The Optimist.  ”They tend to use all the tools at their disposal to get information.  With the new iPad, we definitely foresee the potential for an explosion in news consumption.”

Digital Comics Just got a Whole Lot Bigger!

When we look at the iPad we’re always looking for apps that catch our attention very quickly.  And comics apps fit that profile.  I’m a comics fan and when Panelfly launched their iPhone/iPod Touch app to me they created a WOW factor.  Their patent pending narrative navigation engine simply created a real cool user experience. We can certainly debate whether or not reading comics on the iPhone’s small screen becomes tedious.  You have to keep scrolling and zooming in and out just to read the speech balloons, and sometimes the small display can become a bit challenging to showcase full-page art.

Now, with the advantage of the iPad’s much larger screen, digital comics will become a great experience.   So imagine your favorite comic book or graphic novel on a gorgeous 9.7-inch LED backlit display.  It will look simply fantastic. Perhaps one small issue could be that publishers will need to reformat their comics to fit in the new screen size, but that simply will not be a problem.  And if you can rotate them, or view two pages at once, that will be even better.

Looking for a bigger experience?  Well, that is what Panelfly intends to do with their upcoming optimized version of the popular comic book reader for the iPad.  With a new library, new store & a new reading experience we believe Panelfly will raise the bar on digital comics.

Stay tuned for more reviews on Panelfly and their upcoming comic book reader.

Allrecipes.com Thinks iPad is the next Killer Device

Allrecipes.com, an online recipe site, recently released Dinner Spinner Pro, an enhanced version of its original iPhone app.

The “Spinner” portion of this app allows cooks to select a “Dish” (Appetizer, Bread, Salad, etc.), “Ingredient” (Beef, Cheese, Fish, etc.) and “Ready In” (the amount of time you have to prepare) button.  It then searches the recipes at the allrecipes.com site and provides users with a selection of recipes matching their criteria.  In addition to the ingredient lists and cooking directions, cooks also receive nutrition information and reviews and ratings from other cooks.

I find this app useful with one drawback, the size of my iPhone.  The size of the screen makes it a bit challenging when cooking and I’m hoping all that will change with the introduction of the iPad.

According to TechCrunch, “Allrecipes’ president, Lisa Sharples, agrees that the iPad will be a “killer” device in the kitchen.”  It will offer a larger screen than the iPhone and help expand the eBook market.  I’m hoping allrecipes.com is busy working on an app that will embrace all the iPad has to offer.
