Over 5 Million iOS Games Downloaded Every Day

In a news release by DIstimo, it was announced that over 5 million games a day were downloaded from the App Store in March 2011. This represents the collective downloads of over 63 million iOS gamers across the US and European territories, averaging 2.5 games per month each.

Interestingly, Distimo recently announced their partnership with Newzoo, an international games market research firm. The demographic information Newzoo collects from Gamer Surveys will pair nicely with the detailed App Store data mined by Distimo to provide indepth and insightful information such as this to the gaming industry. Beginning in June 2011, access to this data (including the top 300 free and paid games downloaded, the game rankings, the publishers and the average selling prices) will be made commercially available using the Newzoo Data Explorer.

iOS Dominates Mobile App Revenue – Millennial Media Report

According to the latest Millennial Media report Apple’s iOS ecosystem makes up just 28% of the total smartphone market share but remarkably generated over 50% of all app revenue.

Millennial Media’s April Mobile Device Index released earlier today showed Apple was behind Android in terms of smartphone impression share for the fifth consecutive month. Android captured a 53% impression share while Apple lingered behind with a 28% share. But counting ad impressions doesn’t tell the whole story.

Duo Stylus Capacitative Pen for iPad – Accessory Review

One of the best selling points of tablets are their big, beautiful touch screens.  With the tap or swipe of a finger you can access email, read a book, play a game, the list goes on and on.  There may, however, be instances when you feel a more precise instrument is necessary.  Maybe you prefer to handwrite notes during class or sketch a picture using any number of the artistic apps available in the App Store and feel using your finger is a bit awkward.   If that sounds like you, you might want to consider using a stylus like the Duo Stylus from Metix.

In-App Purchasing Patent – Apple Legal Investigating the Issue

Late last week, several independent iOS developers woke up to a bad surprise, as a company named Lodsys threatened to sue them over the use of in-app purchasing mechanisms, which are supposedly covered by patents owned by the company. Earlier today, another wave of legal notices from Lodsys hit several indie iOS developers, including development shops such as Iconfactory, which is behind the Twitterrific app.

While Lodsys claims that its request is valid, Apple’s legal department finally decided to investigate the issue, as after all, if iOS devs start to pony up to be able to legally use Apple’s in-app purchases mechanisms, it would most likely mean the end of it.

Juno Jr’s The Day The Music Stopped – iPad App Review

Juno Jr’s The Day The Music Stopped is a very special app designed for the very special preschoolers in your life. Being a parent, I was fortunate to be able to recruit my nearly 3-year-old daughter to help me give this app a test-drive. Overwhelmingly, she loved it which means I did too.

This interactive musical e-book is based on the award winning Juno Jr. DVD whose loveable characters are featured with stunning graphics and original orchestral music. The story is clever and easy to follow: join Juno and her brother Rai Rai along with their friends in saving Harmonia Springs from a future without music when the invention of a ‘shush machine’ causes problems. Everything in Harmonia Spings is made of music and the touch-screen interface allows you to play instruments and interact with the characters throughout the story.

Rat on a Skateboard – iPad Game Review

Rat on a Skateboard is a special kind of game, easy to play and get the hang of but very difficult to master. For me, these are the truly addictive games.

The premise is simple, you choose your game mode (power stunts, banana harbor or master specific courses in ‘Challenges’) and navigate Ratty by tapping on your screen (to jump or speed up) through a series of courses and obstacles without falling off your skateboard. Various things gain you extra points, including in-air flipkicks and grabbing power-up items throughout your travels.

The space-based role playing game Warpgate HD by Freeverse is currently on sale for free. Released over a year ago, this is the first time the adventure game has been less than its original price of $7.99. There is no telling when this game will skyrocket back to full price again, so get it while you can.

Warpgate is a gamer’s game. It is not for the casual player. The tutorial alone will take an hour to go through, and although you may be the kind of person that likes to figure out the controls by yourself, you really do need the tutorial for at least some of the actions.
