AT&T and Other Carriers See a Future for Tablets with only 3G/4G Built-in

Tablet WiFiAccording to AT&T’s president of emerging devices, Glenn Lurie, the falling cost of cellular radio hardware will encourage tablet manufacturers to move toward equipping all of their devices such that they are 3G or 4G capable. The consequence of this move would mean the end of tablets that are only equipped with WiFi capabilities for network connections which is the configuration that currently dominates the tablet market (only half of the iPads currently sold are equipped with cellular functionality).

Many families share an iPad, especially families with children, and people have wanted a way to restrict content to a single user since the iPad was first released.

According to one developer who got in touch with Apple after submitting a suggestion, Apple might indeed be working on separate iPad accounts for multiple users.

Survey Finds High Consumer Demand for Rumored iPad Mini

iPad MiniIt would sure be nice if Apple would give us some kind of hint regarding their intentions for the production of a mini version of the iPad.

We’ve heard a rumor or two on the topic and even argued why it might make sense, and now a survey conducted during the last week of April this year by PriceGrabber (a part of Experian) endeavors to evaluate the interest of 2,603 U.S. online shopping consumers in a smaller form-factor iPad.

AT&T Executive: Unlimited Data Was a Mistake

AT&TApparently Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s chief executive, feels that he made a mistake when he directed the company toward offering unlimited data plans. During an address delivered at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference this past week Stephenson discussed “the state of the wireless industry,” explaining that the ‘everything for one low price’ model means that those customers with lighter use are subsidizing those who consume large amounts of data.

iPad 2′s New to 32nm A5 Processor Provides Longer Battery Life

New ProcessorWhen Apple made the decision to continue selling the iPad 2 alongside the new third generation iPad, many wondered if there would be enough incentive for people to choose the older device (beyond the cost savings with a $100 price drop for each model of the second generation tablet). It seems one of the biggest reasons may be because of a change to a newer 32nm A5 processor (using
Samsung’s 32nm high-k + metal gate LP transistors) away from the original 45nm version.

Though the two processors are very similar, the new version seems to draw less power resulting in a noticeable improvement in the iPad 2′s battery life.
