We recently reported about Israel banning the import of iPads because of issues related to Wi-Fi. But, did the official explanation for seizing the devices at the airport ever make sense? At least, 20 iPads purchased in the U.S. had been seized at Ben-Gurion Airport. All devices were confiscated and held in storage for 45 shekels ($12) a day.
From what we’ve heard, the official explanation is that the Communications Ministry was concerned the iPads might disrupt local Wi-Fi networks, including those used by the military. However, after extensive talks with Apple and some European communications ministries, Israel has lifted its ban.
According to sources, the tests proved the device identifies the Wi-Fi access point in its surroundings and adjusts itself automatically, enabling the iPad to be operated without interfering with other wireless devices, the ministry said.
“Accordingly, the import of a single device per person will be permitted commencing Sunday, April 25th,” the ministry said. The ministry also ordered the release of the 20 iPads that had been confiscated. More people will now have the chance to enjoy the iPad experience!
