Canadian Man Forgets Passport, Uses iPad Instead

Canadian-born Martin Reisch found himself hours from home, approaching the U.S. border without his passport. However, like every good Apple fanboy, he had his iPad. How did an iPad help get him into the country? He produced a scan of his passport that he keeps on it to the border officer.

Reisch told the Associated Press that he was traveling to the U.S. by way of Quebec to visit friends for the holidays and bring Christmas presents for the little ones.

iPads at Work – App Developer

As we move along in our iPads at Work series, we thought it would be interesting to cover the iPad from an App Developer’s point of view.  If you develop apps for a living, it goes without saying, the platform you develop for (iPhone, iPad, etc.) becomes an important tool.

Mark, an App Developer from La Jolla, CA, has developed a number of apps for the iPhone and iPad and uses his iPad in and out of the office on a daily basis.

Thanks for taking the time to send us your input Mark.  Now let’s see how an actual app developer uses his iPad at work.

iPads for High School Students?

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Monte Vista Christian School has 60 iPads ready to serve advanced placement students with e-books, instead of the old paper variety. The iPads were introduced, this past Thursday, to advanced placement students who will participate in a pilot project. If all goes well, the school anticipates replacing heavy and expensive textbooks with cheaper, interactive e-versions.

The school believes is among the first to adopt iPads, but it won’t be the last. Teachers love the ability to get definitions of words with a click, and the access to video and newspapers. In some classes, students are using the iPads for anatomy demonstrations. English teacher Marcus Schwager, is excited to show students how to look up obscure words in Shakespeare and get the proper pronunciations.

iPad Camera Connection Kit in Action

The iPad Camera Connection Kit began shipping a few days ago. By now, many of you may have received the kit. If you haven’t, we have a few preliminary details that should be of interest to you and others interested in using the iPad to share pictures.

There have been reports the connection kit has worked with USB headphones, headsets and microphones. TidBITS ran a test that discovered the connection kit will work with most USB headphones, headsets or microphones, making it possible to either listen to music or take a VoIP call with normal computer-oriented add-ons. According to the report, the call quality is quite good and could make it considerably easier to use Skype for those who don’t want to use Bluetooth headsets.

A few other interesting reports we collected on the Internet.

Israel Lifts Its iPad Ban

We recently reported about Israel banning the import of iPads because of issues related to Wi-Fi. But, did the official explanation for seizing the devices at the airport ever make sense? At least, 20 iPads purchased in the U.S. had been seized at Ben-Gurion Airport. All devices were confiscated and held in storage for 45 shekels ($12) a day.

From what we’ve heard, the official explanation is that the Communications Ministry was concerned the iPads might disrupt local Wi-Fi networks, including those used by the military. However, after extensive talks with Apple and some European communications ministries, Israel has lifted its ban.

According to sources, the tests proved the device identifies the Wi-Fi access point in its surroundings and adjusts itself automatically, enabling the iPad to be operated without interfering with other wireless devices, the ministry said.

“Accordingly, the import of a single device per person will be permitted commencing Sunday, April 25th,” the ministry said. The ministry also ordered the release of the 20 iPads that had been confiscated. More people will now have the chance to enjoy the iPad experience!

iPad 3G New Orders Shipping on May 7th

Hello Everyone! Apple has just updated its online store, listing the latest shipping date for your iPad 3G.

If you ordered an iPad 3G, just like me, prepare for it to be delivered on May 7th. You will need to keep close attention to that big brown truck from UPS.

For our European friends and readers, be patient. You will get yours very soon. I believe this could be a good indication that your WiFi and 3G models will be available simultaneously in Europe. At least, by end of May anyway.

We’ve also heard that Apple is assuring existing pre-order customers, that their existing iPad 3G orders should still be coming in late April. The May 7th date seems to only apply to new orders.

Norway’s Prime Minister Governing with His iPad

Apparently, even politicians have found ways to use their new iPad to keep everyone “in check”. A delayed or canceled flight isn’t an excuse anymore. That seems to be the case for the Prime Minister of Norway.

CNN reports that Norwegian prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, was in New York this week for President Obama’s nuclear summit and has been left stranded on American soil thanks to the widespread closure of European airspace. The volcanic eruption in Iceland sent a cloud of ash toward mainland Europe, resulting in over 6,000 canceled flights across the E.U.

While Israel is not jumping on the iPad bandwagon yet, other countries seem to be quite pleased with the iPad. And according to Stoltenberg’s press secretary, Norway’s government is being run via an iPad. Perhaps, Steve Jobs should use Prime Minister Stoltenberg as a tester before the iPhone OS 4.0 update becomes available.

The Multiple Roles of My iPad

A lot has been said about the iPad’s potential as a replacement for your laptop. Many people have expressed some valid concerns as to why this device might not be able to replace your computer completely.

I’ve been on the road for the last 3 weeks, watching people use different devices and even the iPad. I’ve been comparing notes and trying to figure out the different ways I can use my iPad. The question I’ve been trying to answer is – does the iPad suit my lifestyle well?

My e-book and newscaster: Every day before I go to bed, I like to do two things. First, catch up with the daily news while trying to avoid disturbing my wife’s sleeping time. Second, like to read a chapter or two of whatever books my friends have recommended. In theory, I could go downstairs to watch TV or read a book alone. However, I’ve always like the comfort of my bed, plus I like to accumulate points with my wife by not leaving her alone all the time!

How Do People Feel About The iPad?

Attensity, a text analytics company, reported today some interesting data they’ve found by collecting some 50,000 Tweets on the iPad. Even though this is not a huge sample it provides some interesting data as to how people feel about the iPad. Here are a few interesting data points.

According to Attensity, the reviewed data shows that a large majority of the users (65%) really liked the iPad, while approximately 25% of the tweets collected were from people who were not thrilled. Of those that felt the most strongly, few really hated the iPad, while a larger number loved it. Also note that these numbers remained fairly constant since the announcement of the iPad.

PadGadget’s First Quick Impressions On iPad

We have just opened our iPads. After weeks of waiting we have finally touched our new toy, and, well, WOW! It feels and looks awesome, already feels like this multi-touch device could really change the way we look at mobile computing, and may very well completely change the way we deal with the information and content in our daily lives.

Meeting the iPad

When we opened it, WOW, the screen is big and bright, with vibrant colors. Immediately takes your breath away. It is just so simple to navigate on the iPad that it amazes you. It doesn’t feel like a laptop screen ripped away from its frame. Very elegant!

Many people were concerned about the iPad being a just a big iPhone. That is so not true. The expanded real estate changes everything. Instead of having to  try to cram everything into a series of pull-back-up screen stacks, iPad apps just have lots of room to breathe. You move the iPad in different ways and many of your apps display a split-view in landscape mode, with content on the right and an index of items in a column on the left.
