Hulu Unveils more Original Programming

Last year, Netflix signed a multimillion dollar deal to score the rights to Kevin Spacey’s show, House of Cards, which will start filming in March. That marked the television-streaming giant’s first foray into original programming, and since then, Netflix has followed up with mobster series Lilyhammer, debuting in February.

Not to be outdone by the competition, Hulu has decided to aim for more original programming too, after its first documentary series ended up being successful last year.  Its first independent fictional television series, Battleground, is a political drama from JD Walsh and Marc Webb, set to debut in February.

Netflix still Vastly more Popular than iTunes for Movies and TV Shows

A recent study by City Investment Research shows that Netflix is still the top dog when it comes to Internet watching of television shows and movies, growing by seven percent between May and December of this year. Popular media-streaming website Hulu dropped by four percent in the same time period.

Netflix’s share of  Internet viewers went from 20 to 27 percent, even while Hulu was dropping from 19 to 15 percent. Other Internet viewing providers like, Amazon, Comcast, CBS, and NBC also showed an increase in the share. However, iTunes, the stalwart that it is, didn’t budge in its share of viewing. Apple’s media streaming service held steadfast at a mere eight percent, which is even lower than the “other” category.

Yesterday I wrote about Steve Jobs’ dream of bringing an Apple branded Smart TV to the public, an idea that was revealed in Walter Isaacson’s biography of the visionary who managed to transform so many aspects of our lives.

The release of the biography and the discovery of (possible) future Apple products, like an Apple TV, has stirred up the Internet rumor mill. One potential explanation for the current lack of an Apple TV comes from Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu, who says that the product is being held back by content and licensing deals.

Apple Considers a Bid for Hulu

Is Apple looking to spend some of its $76.2 billion in cash and securities and expand its online video options in the process? Bloomberg reports that could be the case.

According to two people in the know, but not “authorized to speak publicly,” Apple is in early talks and considering a bid for Hulu, an online video subscription service that offers hit TV shows and movies.  “Hulu would add a new element to their arsenal from a streaming and subscription standpoint,” Gleacher & Co.
