A Professor and Author’s Perspective on the Impact of Apple’s iBooks Textbooks

A familiar conversation that takes place every semester surrounds the hot topic of textbook costs. The longest lines on campus are at the bookstore where countless students are buying books required for their classes. It’s not uncommon to overhear them declare the unfairness of a $200 textbook for a business class or about the class that requires multiple books.

With Apple’s announcement this week of its new iBook textbook program I felt a mix of interest, excitement, and apprehension. These are not uncommon feelings for professors and I had a chance to watch a colleague download and open his first new “textbook”.

After Prom iPad Raffle

Senior Prom has been a tradition in US schools for generations.  Boys and girls dress to the nines, go to dinner and enjoy an evening of dancing and fun.  Each school has its own traditions and many of them include After Prom events.  These events offer students a place to go and hang out with friends instead of engaging in less favorable activities.  Always a good thing at that age!

Apparently Haverford High School in Pennsylvania is trying the high tech approach in order to attract students to their BLAST (Best and Last of All Senior Times) event this year.  Despite a decrease in the number of volunteers and donations, the culmination of this event will include a 4:30 AM raffle with several prizes, the top ones being an iPad, iPod Touch and 19-inch HD TV/DVD combo.  Now that’s the way to end your senior year and don’t worry, they must be present to win!

iPads for High School Students?

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Monte Vista Christian School has 60 iPads ready to serve advanced placement students with e-books, instead of the old paper variety. The iPads were introduced, this past Thursday, to advanced placement students who will participate in a pilot project. If all goes well, the school anticipates replacing heavy and expensive textbooks with cheaper, interactive e-versions.

The school believes is among the first to adopt iPads, but it won’t be the last. Teachers love the ability to get definitions of words with a click, and the access to video and newspapers. In some classes, students are using the iPads for anatomy demonstrations. English teacher Marcus Schwager, is excited to show students how to look up obscure words in Shakespeare and get the proper pronunciations.
