Updated BMW Car Magazine Hits the iPad App Store

BMW aficionado’s will be happy with the German luxury car maker’s latest iPad BMW Magazine release.  The app builds on the success of their first iPad magazine published in May, shortly after the iPad’s launch, and includes all new interactive features.

While the first BMW magazine app was successful, it was simply a digital version of their glossy magazine. Many users loved the pictures and stories but thought the app didn’t take advantage of the iPad’s multimedia capabilities and the experience was more like reading a PDF on the iPad. The new app now fully delivers on the iPad’s multimedia promise.

The Competition for iPad – App Review

My kids love to read and I’m always on the lookout for good kids books to share with family and friends.  The Competition HD by Dutch publishing house Unieboek | Het Spectrum is a cute story with brightly colored illustrations and multiple reading options.  It’s the first release in a five book series with additional titles coming in September.

A story about a little goldfish’s adventure to find the boy that owns him, The Competition is a good picture book for kids.  Pim, a young boy, is forced by his father to dump his goldfish into the river because of a family vacation to the beach.  Goldfish Harry (the English version) hears the word competition mentioned as he’s dumped out of his bowl and that’s enough to get him motivated to swim to the competition and find Pim.  He meets a number of characters during his adventure, eventually reaching his destination and finding exactly what he’s been looking for.

Users have several reading options in The Competition.  They may listen to the story, read the story themselves or select “learn to read” and have the story read to them as each word is highlighted.  Readers aren’t limited to these three reading options alone.  They also have five different languages from which to choose, with professional narration available in English (British), Flemish, French, German and Spanish.

German Government Cracks Down on Apple’s GPS Use

The German Government has gone on the offensive against Apple’s gathering of GPS location information from iPad and iPhone owners.  According to a report by German magazine “Der Spiegel“, German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said Apple must “immediately lay out” what personal data is collected, how long it’s stored and what Apple is doing with the data.

Germany has some of the strictest privacy laws of any country in the world.  The German Datenschutz (Data Protection) laws are very specific on what user data may be collected or stored and how the user is informed of the data collection practice.

Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said “Users of iPhones and other GPS capable devices must know what personal information is being collected” and that it would be “unthinkable”  if Apple truly was tracking personal and identifiable profile or location data.
