Anyone Can Solve Crosswords With Across Lite for iPad

Across Lite Crosswords by Literate Software recently made the leap from Mac/PC to mobile with the release of a new app for iPad. The app, which is free to download, offers all of the features of a paid app, such as Crux HD (PadGadget = 4.5 stars). Across Lite adds a feature that many other crossword apps (and most paper puzzles) lack: the ability set the app’s level of difficulty. While this may not attract logophiles who do the Saturday New York Times crossword in ink, it does allow for anyone who finds crossword puzzles intimidating to give them a try.

The “Lite” in the title is deceptive, for unlike many free apps, this one is substantial. In addition to the 10 puzzles included with the app, users can easily download free, high quality puzzles from a wide range of sources including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and (my favorite) The Onion. A Wi-Fi or 3G connection is needed to download the puzzles, but not to complete puzzles that are already stored within the app.

Feevo HD Brings Addictive Match Three-style Gameplay to iPad

Feevo HD marks Tetris Online‘s first foray into iOS. Don’t be mislead by the brand name because Feevo is more like PopCap‘s Bejeweled series than a Tetris-style game. As anyone who has ever played Bejeweled knows, this style of game play can be tough to put down.

The object of Feevo HD is simple: match four contiguous like shapes to clear them. Feevo’s two game modes — Fever Mode and Blaze Mode — set it apart from the many other similar games in its class. In Fever mode the player has a set number of moves (“actions”) in which to clear the most shapes. A well-placed move will extend the number of actions allotted, so skillfull players will find a round of Fever Mode can be quite lengthy.

Thingy Blox HD – iPad App Review

Thingy Blox HD is a “match 3″ puzzle game, made more complex thanks to the addition of pictures to the blocks. Users can play Thingy Blox 4 ways: timed, strategy, challenge, and multiplayer.

The level of difficulty can be set in each mode as “normal” or “tricky.” As is typical in match 3 puzzle games, users score more points for removing larger segments of blocks at one time. Thingy Blox HD demands that the user pay attention to the overall game board pattern, as well as which of the 9 thingies you are looking for on the block (i.e. an animal or a face). The app offers a very clear tutorial to help players get started.

Miss Spider’s Tea Party – App Review

Miss Spider’s Tea Party is an all time favorite book at our house!  We love the brightly colored illustrations, the characters and the lesson it teaches.  Both the small cardboard condensed version and the regular size, full-story hardcover have been well used.  I actually read our books so many times when my girls were toddlers, that I had them memorized.

Always on the lookout for “mom” and “kid” related apps to review, I went to the App Store recently and was thrilled to find Miss Spider’s Tea Party in the list of top apps.  Here’s my review of this wonderful children’s book app:
