Cut the Buttons HD is a Scrappy Addition to Casual Gaming – iPad App Review

Cut the Buttons HD for iPad offers simple, intuitive game play that departs from the subject matter typically found in casual gaming for iOS. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a seamstress to appreciate this game, or even to succeed at playing it. Rather the game relies on the player’s quick reaction to snip as many buttons as possible into a cup during a round.

Cut the Buttons HD earns high marks for its realistic UI. The fabric scraps and buttons are charming. It is nice to see a subject matter for a casual game that draws from something besides the heavily masculine worlds of fantasy and warfare. The buttons also give a satisfying clink when they fall into the cup.

Playing Float is an addictive delight!  The developers claim that this is a game that makes you feel happy and that couldn’t be more true.

The premise of the game is easy: balloons fall from the sky and you have to bump, bump, bump them back higher keeping them safe from hazards for as long as the timer dictates.  Each level gets progressively more difficult with a larger number of balloons, new shapes of balloon and varied time on the clock during which you must protect them.

Maggie and the Trouble with Monkeys for iPad

I love to read books with my kids and eBooks are something relatively new for us. Since the release of the iPad, we’ve read a number of books together and really enjoyed it. Maggie and the Trouble with Monkeys is an app we all had fun reading and playing.

This interactive children’s app has a cute story, fun fonts and colorful illustrations.  Join Maggie, a bright and imaginative five and a half year old, in her latest adventure.  She’s got a little monkey that makes her life extremely difficult and causes lots of trouble.  He does everything from eat all the cookies in the cookie jar to get mud on her new dress.   What will she do?  Will Maggie learn to love a monkey after all?  I don’t want to spoil the ending, so you’ll have to buy the app to find out.

Enjoy this 22 page (11 screen) book app with your kids today.  Maggie and the Trouble with Monkeys is available in the App Store for $4.99.

Marble Mixer for iPad – First Look

Marble Mixer for iPad is a game the whole family can enjoy.  This modern version of marbles lets players test their luck and skill with three different style games:  Space Mania, Table Tactics and Monster Picnic.  Each game variation requires players to flick marbles onto a spinning center target.  Players launch marbles from their corner of the screen to score points and you can have up to 4 players competing at the same time.  The more marbles you sink into the hole the better in Monster Picnic.  Don’t get too carried away sinking marbles though! Space Mania and Table Tactics both give points based on the marble’s stopping position, similar to shuffle board or curling. The closer your marble gets to the hole without falling in, the higher the points.

Additional features include:

  • 1 – 4 players
  • Simple controls
  • Cool & collected or fast & frenzied game play
  • Realistic physics
  • High quality graphics

Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart, you’ll have fun competing against friends and family with Marble Mixer.  It’s available in the App Store for $1.99 so check it out this weekend for your 4th of July get together.

FarmVille Coming to iPad

For all FarmVille fans out there, it seems the popular real-time farm simulation game, developed by Zynga, could be coming to the iPad. For those who don’t know, FarmVille is a popular game on Facebook. You probably have seen many of your Facebook friends indicating they need help with chickens or want a new cow.

Several months ago, we heard Zynga talking about their plans to bring the game to mobile platforms, but we haven’t seen any specific information until the recent rumors. A recent search of domains has uncovered both farmvilleiphone.com and farmvilleipad.com, both reserved by the same company currently overseeing Zynga’s official FarmVille website. All of this could be a coincidence, but it looks like a mobile version of the game could be landing soon in iPad world.

Release dates are not known at this moment. As of now, all rumors are speculation, with the confirmation from Zynga that indeed they’re working on mobile versions of the game. It’ll be interesting to see if Zynga makes its way to the iPad. Ngmoco did it already with their popular We Rule game.

Miss Spider’s Tea Party – App Review

Miss Spider’s Tea Party is an all time favorite book at our house!  We love the brightly colored illustrations, the characters and the lesson it teaches.  Both the small cardboard condensed version and the regular size, full-story hardcover have been well used.  I actually read our books so many times when my girls were toddlers, that I had them memorized.

Always on the lookout for “mom” and “kid” related apps to review, I went to the App Store recently and was thrilled to find Miss Spider’s Tea Party in the list of top apps.  Here’s my review of this wonderful children’s book app:

Your iPad as a Sketching Toy

Isn’t it fun to be in the store and see those “classic” toys still on the shelves that you used to play with as a child?  Well, here’s another one to add to your list of iPad apps – MagicSketch.  It’s based on the classic Etch A Sketch® toy introduced by the Ohio Art Company in 1960.

Ooohhh!  That fire engine red frame, silver screen and two white knobs really take you back to your youth.  The Etch A Sketch® has passed the test of time, moved into the group of classic toys that generation after generation continue to buy and has now etched it’s way into modern technology.  Like the toy it is modeled after, the MagicSketch app has a bright red frame, silver screen and two white knobs.

iPad “Drawing Pad” App for Kids

One of the things I enjoy about mobile devices is the entertainment value. My family uses iPhones and iPods regularly to play games and watch movies while driving in the car, during volleyball practice and waiting in doctor’s offices. Now we have the iPad to add to our list.

Shortly before the iPad launch, I was contacted by Darren Murtha about an app called “Drawing Pad.” He sent me some info and a link to a YouTube demo video. I knew immediately that my kids would love playing with an app like “Drawing Pad,” but I was curious to see how well it actually worked. We downloaded the app on Sunday and spent quite a bit of time playing with it. Following is my review:

Protect Their Little Ears

Remember the 80′s when you got your first walkman?  And then when you got one that would auto-reverse the tape?  Wow, what a technological breakthrough!  I clearly remember my parents telling my brother and me to turn our walkmen down as we rocked to U2 in the backseat of our car.

Now, fast forward 25 years and we’re saying the same thing our parents did.  Although the devices have changed, the concern parents have about volume has not.
