Pop star Beyonce played four sold-out concerts at New York’s Roseland Ballroom in August of 2011. The mini concerts, called “4 Intimate Nights With Beyonce” were played to a maximum of 3,500 attendees for each night.

The entire engagement was recorded and later released as a DVD set that included coverage of the concerts, behind-the-scene footage, a short documentary of Beyonce’s career, starting at the age of nine with Destiny’s Child. Solyaris Visual Movie Browser for iPad Puts Hollywood Connections at your Fingertips– iPad App Review

Thanks to Solyaris, by developer Beat Raess, film buffs have a new tool to explore the interrelationships between actors, directors, and the movies they create.

This iPad-only app borrows the distinctive UI from Jammboxx’s Discovr Music (PadGadget = 4.5 stars) and Discovr Apps (PadGadget = 3.5 stars) and applies it to the history of film making. Solyaris likely takes its name from a ’70s Russian Sci-Fi flick that was remade starring George Clooney in 2002. Notably, the app confirms that the two films have no common cast members, but both movies credit Polish writer Stanislaw Lem as the author whose work inspired the films.

RealBeat Turns Everything Around You Into A Song – iPad App Review

Looking for a fun way to create new beats for your next hip-hop album? If you have any interest in rhythm and sound at all, RealBeat is a fun and exciting way to sample the sounds around you and mix it into a catchy backbeat.

When you first open the app, you may feel a little intimidated. There are a lot of things going on the screen, but believe me, it will all start to feel natural the more you fiddle with things. In the lower left corner, there are six numbers with red dots next to them. That is your starting point. Hit one of the red dots and make a noise. You can snap your finger, scare your cat, scratch your beard, pull tape off a cardboard box, anything. RealBeat will record a sample of the sound, about a seconds worth, and play it back to you in a pattern. You can have six different sounds running at the same time, and you can loop the pattern and play it back within the mix on two different channels. You can also type something into the app’s text-to-speech feature to get a robo-sample. It’s like having your iPad adding a vocal track to the mix.

Bright Bright for iPad – App Review

Go retro with the new iPad app from Arik Devens called Bright Bright – Draw with glowing light pegs.  When I was a kid, I could spend hours punching little colorful pegs into the black holes on my Lite Brite and create all sorts of wonderful pictures.  I must also admit, I’ve never purchased one for my own kids because the little pegs were just one more thing to add to the clutter of Polly Pockets, Barbie accessories and any mixture of small toy pieces. Enter Bright Bright , the easy-to-use digital version of colorful pegs and creative pictures I’m happy for my kids to use.

The Bright Bright screen includes a black “peg board” with a variety of tools laid out across the top.  Users have access to 7 peg color choices, different picture stencils, a light switch and more.  Kids can create pictures using pre-made stencils or design original pieces of art. Once their finished, flip the light switch on and watch the pictures glow.  Add an interesting effect with the Color Wave feature and watch the colors of your work change before your eyes.

It’ll take a little while to complete a stencil but don’t worry if you’re not able to finish your project in one sitting, using the Save and Load features lets you go back to your work anytime.  Then show off your favorite pictures by saving them to photos or emailing them to grandma.

iPad – A Powerful Home Automation and Entertainment Tool

If you’re an iPad owner, there’s a good chance that you’re either a gadget geek or you simply enjoy adopting new technology. Early adopters often tend to be the ones pursuing a “connected lifestyle” through the implementation of  home automation or wireless entertainment systems. If you fall into this camp, you’ll be happy to know that the iPad is quickly becoming an integral piece of the connected home with several vendors (such as Savant, Meridian and Crestron) already providing iPad ready solutions.

If you’re a home media and automation enthusiast, Savant just rolled out a new $500 in-wall iPad docking solution which allows you to mount your iPad directly in a wall. This is a great option for using the iPad as an individual room or whole house control unit. With the Savant iPad app, users can control video, audio, lighting, climate, security and other settings.

The docks magnetically-attached removable bezels allow you the added flexibility of being able to easily remove the iPad from its in-wall dock and take it with you anywhere in the house. The dock is also available as a $350 desktop unit and both nicely complement Savant’s Home Automation iPad app to create an attractive iPad-based control solution.

iPad On The Road

In a previous post, we took the iPad on a plane to check how well it travels. This time, we took it on the road. The trip – from Dallas, Texas to Broken Bow Lake, Oklahoma – was a little experiment to see how useful the iPad could be while in the car. Note that I was the co-pilot, as using an iPad while driving is a no-go!

The first thing we did while fueling up the car in Dallas was to download a GPS app. We thought MotionX GPS would do the trick, but quickly realized that the app was not really suited for turn by turn navigation – the app is really geared toward hikers and campers. So we quickly switched back to Google Maps, which was more than enough for what we needed.

Given the limited choices on the radio while on the highway in the middle of nowhere, we quickly hooked the iPad to the car stereo via the headphone jack, and it instantly became the “music hub” for the whole trip. Since I was not the driver, I had the privilege to hog the iPad for the majority of the trip, and thanks to Angry Birds and Flight Control HD, boredom never was an issue. Even Words With Friends was fun to play, despite the fact that Edge or 3G were not available all the time. I also used the iPad to catch up with Fringe, since I missed the last two episodes.

iPad Flies the Friendly Skies

On most flights you can’t even get a lousy bag of peanuts, but in the near future you just might get an iPad. London based Bluebox Avionics has ported their bluebox AI In Flight Entertainment (IFE) system to the Apple iPad. Bluebox AI allows passengers to watch the latest in-flight movies, listen to music, read magazines and play a wide range of games from the Apple App Store.

Airlines have historically taken a number of approaches to in-flight entertainment ranging from standard overhead systems to in-seat units and even portable units.  This is the first solution to use the iPad as a commercialized in-flight system. Bluebox takes an innovative approach by using WiFi to deliver entertainment and data services instead of the more complex and costly wired solution. They also offer the airlines customized apps to differentiate and brand their passenger service.
