Verizon to Allow Data Plan Sharing?

VerizonIf employee training materials can be trusted it looks like Verizon is getting close to their 2011 promise that we would see new data sharing plans for 2012.

Working in much the same way as existing family sharing plans, data could also be shared for a nominal fee for each additional device such as iPad or iPhone (though some conflicting reports seem to indicate that you will only pay a one time “sharing fee” on top of a more expensive and inclusive plan and that there will not actually be a per device charge on top).

AT&T Giving Away Free Month of Data Service to iPad 2 Owners

Competition is a great thing for consumers.  With Apple now selling the iPad 2 through AT&T and Verizon, both carriers are competing to land as many customers on their networks as they can.  Both carriers offer a range of data plans for iPad 2 users and AT&T is upping the ante by throwing in a free month of data for new iPad 2 owners.

Original iPad Unlimited Data Plan Still Valid with iPad 2 Upgrade

If you’re thinking about upgrading your first generation iPad next week, and are still using the original unlimited data offered by at&t when the device launched, rejoice, as at&t will let you keep that plan once you upgrade to the iPad 2.

Unlike the plans currently offered by at&t, early iPad adopters were lucky enough to be allowed to use a truly unlimited data plan, for $30 per month. About two months after its inception, at&t replaced the plan with two new plans, both capped. The plans are still in use today, and cost $15 per month for 250 MB of data, and $25 per month for 2 GB.

Want a Free iPad? Move to Japan

There is no shortage of fraudulent schemes on the Internet promising unsuspecting consumers free iPads.  Most of these usually don’t end well for the consumer and many involve some form of identity theft.  Although we recommend our readers stay vigilant when an offer sounds too good to be true, we’ve actually found someone who is legitimately giving iPads away for free.  Well, sort of.

According to mocoNews, Japanese wireless carrier SoftBank is offering an “iPad for Everybody” promotion (translated) which includes a 16GB iPad for free.  What’s the catch you might ask?  Well, you have to signup for a two-year data plan contract to qualify for the offer and the data plans run about $56 dollars per month.  So, if you do the math, that adds up to $1,344 for a two year contract with SoftBank.  The deal isn’t a bad offer but we still have it slightly better here in the US.  A 16GB iPad runs $629 and if you add 24 months of AT&T service you’d spend a total of  $1,229 saving a little more than a hundred dollars over two years.

Class-Action Lawsuit over the iPad 3G Data Plans Changes

iPad 3G owners in San Jose, California, recently filed a class-action lawsuit through the United States District Court over the recent removal of the iPad 3G unlimited data plan, according to The New York Times.

In case you missed it, the initial iPad 3G data plans were abandoned on June 7th and changed to two new options, a $15 for 200MB per month plan, as well as a $25 for 2GB per month plan. Only customers who bought their iPad 3G and subscribed to the unlimited plan before June 7th were allowed to stay on that plan, as long as they do not switch to any other plan in the future.

The removal of the unlimited plan has the iPad 3G owners feeling “baited” and switched. According to them, they would have never purchased a 3G-capable iPad in the first place if they knew they would not be free to opt in and out of the unlimited data plan at some point in the near future.

If positively received by the court, the outcome of the lawsuit could potentially result in the reinstatement of the unlimited plan.

AT&T Extends iPad Data Plan Deadline

With 3G iPads in short supply, many customers have been scrambling to get their hands on one. This has become an even greater issue now that  AT&T announced they are eliminating their unlimited iPad data plan and replacing it with new capped data plans for the iPhone and iPad. With everyone caught off guard by AT&T’s announcement, most customers will not able to get a new iPad before AT&T introduces its new pricing plans on June 7th.

It looks like AT&T and Apple have worked out an arrangement to help resolve this dilemma. AT&T will extend the unlimited data plan option to any customer that purchases their iPad from the Apple Online Store by June 6.  So what are you waiting for?  Head on over to the Apple Store and order your iPad so you can get unlimited data before it’s too late.

What’s the Difference Between the 3G and WiFi Only iPad?

Now that both the WiFi and 3G iPad models are available, we’ve been getting a lot of questions asking the differences between the two iPads. Here are five things you need to know.

1.) The biggest difference between the two is the addition of 3G wireless capabilities which allow you to stay connected to the Internet while on the go. To use the 3G service you’ll need to sign up for one of two iPad data plans. One plan gives you 250MB for $14.99 while the other is an unlimited monthly plan for $29.99. Both plans are limited to domestic US coverage. You have the option to sign-up for international roaming if you need coverage while traveling abroad, but be careful as international roaming fees can be extremely expensive.
