A Professor and Author’s Perspective on the Impact of Apple’s iBooks Textbooks

A familiar conversation that takes place every semester surrounds the hot topic of textbook costs. The longest lines on campus are at the bookstore where countless students are buying books required for their classes. It’s not uncommon to overhear them declare the unfairness of a $200 textbook for a business class or about the class that requires multiple books.

With Apple’s announcement this week of its new iBook textbook program I felt a mix of interest, excitement, and apprehension. These are not uncommon feelings for professors and I had a chance to watch a colleague download and open his first new “textbook”.

Help Rescue Mousey Howsee – iPad App Review

Mousey Howsee and the RescuersMousey Howsee is the kind of interactive storybook that has the potential to blow your mind. When you first begin they ask you to use location services to determine your location, which will actually serve to customize the book storyline based on the time of day or your current local weather.

The story also teaches a lesson, as Mousey Howsee begins by hopping into a boat and heading out onto the water when she knows she shouldn’t (she didn’t have permission and had no supervision). This kind of book helps us as parents to teach causality and consequences in an illustrated way that children can more easily understand. This is very helpful when you are dealing with a small child that doesn’t understand the word dangerous and needs to be shown.

Have a Perfectly Poopy Time with The Ogglies – A Dragon Party for Firebottom

The Ogglies - A Dragon Party for FirebottomThe Ogglies are very worried about their dinosaur, Firebottom, and decide to throw him a birthday party to celebrate and cheer him up. All together with their friends Rocky Red, Blinky Blue, and the Chinese girl-dragon Leek-an-Lentil, the oggliest party in history is thrown and they have invited you too!

Pooh's Birthday SurpriseI am always excited when I get the opportunity to review an app developed by Disney because they have a commitment to quality that is second to none. In keeping with this tradition, Pooh’s Birthday Surprise doesn’t disappoint.

Few characters are as classic and recognized as Winnie the Pooh which makes this app feel timeless and special.

Teaching toddlers requires a special kind of patience and skill, with the right amount of instruction and encouragement.
