Appetites – PadGadget iPad Cooking Series

Part of PadGadget’s continuing series Get Cooking with iPad

Appetites differs from most other cooking apps because it’s powered by food bloggers, who are, after all, just regular folks who really love to cook. These D.I.Y. foodies may not be classically trained, but they are never callow, for if they lack any particular skills (or refuse to wear gloves while chopping a habanero chili), they remedy any holes in their backgrounds with enthusiasm and determination.

With Appetites the number of chefs seems not too spoil, but rather enhances, the user experience. Appetites includes a broad range of recipes from starters to desserts. A recent update eliminated the requirement to purchase 30 additional recipes in-app for 0.99 each and introduced several new bloggers into the mix.

Taposé for iPad — An Approved Kickstarter Project

The backers at Kickstarter have already approved Taposé, an unusual iPad app that was inspired by the defunct Microsoft Courier Tablet. According to its developers, Taposé brings the dual screen interface, which made Microsoft’s Courier so intriguing, to the iPad, and will allow users to interact with multiple devices simultaneously. Wow. Backers seem to agree because the project now has over 250% of its funding goal to date.

Taposé’s defining feature is its movable center bar that divides the iPad screen into two segments, but also acts as a temporary holder for images or sticky notes. Users can drag and drop from Safari, drag addresses into Maps, or names and phone numbers into Mail. The app’s design resembles a physical book that lets users draw within its pages as well as choose customized covers. Taposé will also support font formatting, free draw, an eraser, highlighter, sticky notes, image insertion, and list creation within the app.

Get Productive with Next! – iPad App Review

The tagline for Next! states that ‘It’s a good day to be productive’ and I think that’s a good mantra for us all.

This app intends to be a ‘one-stop-shop’, allowing you to manage projects, take notes and store documents in a central location. The three core functions of the app are:

Actions – Encourages you to break down the things you need to do. You can assign specific or generic dates to each item, allowing you to prioritize. You can leave items in your ‘inbox’ that you haven’t decided how to approach, which can be a nice feature when you know you have a task that needs to be done but you haven’t fully contemplated it yet. As well, you can assign tasks a due date of ‘someday’ for those things that are more abstract or perhaps less important and therefore don’t need a true targeted due date.

PBS KIDS Video Comes to the iPad

PBS Kids has always offered a wide-range of television shows for the pre-school set. Now, with the new PBS Kids iPad app, Elmo is always as close as the nearest WiFi (or 3G) connection. Even the youngest children have a good reason to get their cute, stubby fingers all over the iPad, thanks to this new app developed just for them.

The app is designed to be child-safe. Kids can stream more than 1000 videos from its selection of TV shows including The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, Dinosaur Train, Super WHY!, Sesame Street and Word Girl. It will add new videos each week, including a “weekly pick” designed to cover educational content areas such as reading, math, and science. You can also browse playlists from each show. I watched a clip from Sesame Street of Jude Law defining the word “cling.” (Sometimes I really love my job!)

The story between Apple and Time Inc. started a bit rough last year when both companies were battling over iPad magazine subscriptions. However, after months of negotiations and debates, Time Inc. has finally agreed with Apple to allow print magazine subscribers to access the company’s iPad editions for free.

Brought to us by See Here Studios and author/illustrator/composer Valerie Mih, The Three Pandas Animated Storybook brings the three bears story to you with a twist — with pandas!  The traditional story of the three little bears is mirrored with a bamboo forest, bamboo porridge and a ‘Goldilocks’ named Mei Mei.

The app gives you the option of having the book read to you or reading it yourself.  You can also choose whether to auto-play, which reads the book to you without any interaction required on your part.  If you choose to read it yourself, you can even record your voice doing so.
