Last week, Google reached a milestone with its Android App Market by having 400,000 active applications worldwide in its app store.

Google Android Market has taken a bit longer to reach the 400K milestone than Apple’s App Store, which hit the 400K mark in June of 2011. It looks like Apple’s biggest competitor in the app market is starting to catch up, but does the quality stand up to the same standard?

App Downloads Skyrocketed During Last Week of 2011

App Downloads

Did you download an app or 20 over the holidays? Looks like you weren’t alone. According to Flurry, a mobile analytics firm, Android and Apple app stores enjoyed over 1.2 billion downloads in the last week of 2011. Sure there were a lot of us with a little downtime looking at a few new apps, but chances are good that this record-setting week of downloads is due in large part to the 20 million new activations seen by both platforms over the holidays.

Apple’s 100 -Tester Rule for iOS Apps Not Enough

Apple DeveloperDevelopers of all shapes and sizes have complaints about the rules and procedures put in place by Apple. One of the most frustrating is the 100-user cap for testing of new apps. This means that any new app can be tested at a beta level on a maximum of 100 devices that are pre-registered with Apple.

According to the Wall Street Journal these limits are prohibiting good development, especially for outfits such as Instagram that feel they require more testers and are gaining them by circumventing the system and just registering for multiple developers accounts (with each getting 100 testers). An expensive band-aid solution, but (at least for the moment) it works.

Last week Microsoft proudly previewed their Windows Store, their entrance into the already competitive app sales market currently being dominated by the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace.

The catch? It’s not supposed to hit beta until February 2012 which only serves as added fuel to the ‘someday, sometime’ time-frame that Microsoft has become famous for.

Apple’s App Store is Where the Money is for Developers

The Android Marketplace has experienced a large amount of growth over the past few months, with over 295,000 apps and six billion app downloads. Mobile developers are drawn to the platform because of its range of devices and its open-source nature.

In fact, Android dominates mobile marketshare in terms of devices sold. For every two iPhones sold, approximately five Android phones are purchased. That also equates to a significant number of app downloads, but despite Android’s success, the platform is still behind Apple on mobile dollars earned via the Marketplace and the App Store.  Read More »

Apple Store 2.0 App Adds EasyPay Self-Checkout Option

There’s been a major update to the official Apple Store app for iOS, adding EasyPay. EasyPay allows shoppers to scan an item at an Apple Store in order to check themselves out, without the need for an Apple Store employee.

Of course, customers can’t waltz in and purchase a Macbook or an iPad and do their own checkouts. That would prevent Apple employees from upselling on accessories and Apple Care. Instead, the EasyPay checkout service is available for just select accessories.

Apple’s Game Center to Get Avatar Editor?

Back in April of this year, Apple filed a patent application for an avatar editing environment, which could mean that we’ll soon have fully customizable avatars to use with Game Center and possibly other future applications. Apple defines an avatar as a physical representation of the player in the game world, with tools for creating varied and sophisticated alter-egos.

The described avatar editing environment will start with a blank face, and allow the user to add and rescale different facial elements such as eyes, nose, and mouth. This sounds similar to what’s available through services like Xbox Live and Nintendo Wii’s Mii creation feature.
