Why the “Cult of Mac” may be a Brain-changer for Superfans

You don’t have to have a Ph.D. in neuroscience to know that some people really love Apple. Thanks to a recent investigation, it turns out that merely looking at images of Apple products causes the brains of its most ardent supporters to respond just as a religious person’s brain does when he or she views iconography.

Recently the BBC began airing Superbrands, a documentary that examines the logic-defying success of global brands such as Apple, Facebook, and Twitter. In addition to filming the “revival-like” atmosphere at a new store opening, the program arranged for neuroscientists to examine the brain of a fan so dedicated, he claims he never stops thinking about Apple.

Millennial Media’s April Mobile Device Index released earlier today showed Apple was behind Android in terms of smartphone impression share for the fifth consecutive month. Android captured a 53% impression share while Apple lingered behind with a 28% share. But counting ad impressions doesn’t tell the whole story.

As it turns out, the app was released as a webapp optimized for the iPad, and not a full blown iPad app, to get around the restrictions imposed by the App Store.

Big Pharma Stockpiles iPads, Waits for Apps

Times have changed for the Pharmaceutical industry. Gone are the days when sales reps could take physicians on weekend junkets. Thanks to voluntary industry standards, established in 2008, reps don’t even take doctors out to dinner or offer them an endless supply of promotional pens anymore. One group of health care providers, No Free Lunch, even formed a web site proclaiming their refusal to accept all gifts, even prescription samples, from the health care industry.

These changes make the few moments of face time that a pharmaceutical sales rep gets with a physician much more precious. Big Pharma’s most recent response to this sea change has been to buy iPads for its reps. Lots and lots of iPads.

In-App Purchasing Patent – Apple Legal Investigating the Issue

Late last week, several independent iOS developers woke up to a bad surprise, as a company named Lodsys threatened to sue them over the use of in-app purchasing mechanisms, which are supposedly covered by patents owned by the company. Earlier today, another wave of legal notices from Lodsys hit several indie iOS developers, including development shops such as Iconfactory, which is behind the Twitterrific app.

While Lodsys claims that its request is valid, Apple’s legal department finally decided to investigate the issue, as after all, if iOS devs start to pony up to be able to legally use Apple’s in-app purchases mechanisms, it would most likely mean the end of it.

In-App Purchases Patent Troll Threatens iOS Developers

Several independent iOS developers woke up to a bad surprise earlier today: Lodsys, a company specialized in technology-related patents, is threatening to sue them over the use of in-app purchases mechanisms, which are supposedly covered by patents owned by the company. Interestingly enough, the company is going after iOS developers, instead of going after Apple, which included the mechanisms at the heart of iOS in the first place, and requires developers to use them, for all purchases made via their apps.
