AirPort Utility Revamped with iOS Style Cues

Apple Airport UtilityIt’s beginning to look a lot like iOS, everywhere you go… Christmas may be over but Apple delivered one little surprise gift with an update to their AirPort Utility. As described by Apple, the AirPort Utility 6.0 allows you to “set up and manage your Wi-Fi network and AirPort base stations, including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule.” The newly upgraded interface bears a striking resemblance to the iOS counterpart and “starts off with a visual topography for the user’s network including the active status and whether or not updates are waiting.”

RIM’s New Strategy – Hope iOS and Android Screw Up!

Thorsten HeinsI am not so sure that this is the time that I’d like to become the new CEO for RIM, but Thorsten Heins was up to the job having been appointed last week to lead the struggling tech firm. Not that he was a choice from out of nowhere, Heins has been functioning as one of two Chief Operating Officers for the last few years and was in charge of hardware and software product engineering.

Unfortunately, it appears that RIM’s new strategy isn’t to innovate but rather to wait for the actual innovators to fail.

Apple Plans to Hide its Inventions via Fake Products

Adam Lashinsky Apple is well known for being one of the most secretive companies on the planet, so when somebody from the inside starts talking we are all ears trying to get the proverbial glimpse of something, anything. In his recent book, Inside Apple, Adam Lashinsky has a lot to say.

One of the more interesting tidbits is the revelation that the interview to be an engineer at Apple is actually an ongoing process that continues even once you start drawing a paycheck. This insinuation was confirmed by a fellow engineer who said, “A friend of mine who’s a senior engineer at Apple, he works on — or did work on — fake products I’m sure for the first part of his career, and interviewed for 9 months. It’s intense.”

Labor Conditions of Foxconn Employees, as Seen by their Fellow Countryman

The New York Times recently published an article entitled “In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad.” The article is part of a new series, called “The iEconomy” that talks about Apple’s collaboration with the overseas market. Soon after it was published, the New York Times collaborated with Chinese-language business magazine Caixin. The responses to the article are worthy of headline news. However, they didn’t make it to the New York Times itself. The comments were published on the newspaper’s blog, The Lede to little fanfare.

Apple Lands on Top of the Smartphone Heap

The interesting thing about news like this is that most people aren’t likely to be surprised that Apple is the largest smartphone vendor. The hype of the iPhone has proven solid in sales for years now, but it is still amazing to me that the company that sold my first computer (Apple II+) has really hit its stride in the mobile market.

The race for first place is still close and Apple has not claimed the lead by a large amount. The lead is only maintained by .4% over Samsung for the fourth quarter of 2011. In their latest report, Strategy Analytics has determined that Samsung is the overall leader for 2011.

Zynga – Successful Innovator or CopyCat?

Zynga

Who among us can say with any honesty that they haven’t ever been addicted to a Zynga app? Whether you are a Facebook gamer or have them loaded on your iOS or Android device, chances are good you’ve logged more than a few hours with at least one title. Heck, Zynga even makes apps for Google+, Yahoo and MySpace. How does the saying go? It’s hard to throw a rock, and not hit a Zynga game?

Nonetheless, it seems some people are of the opinion that Zynga’s success may be derived more from copying than creating. In fact, Nimblebit took aim at them by mocking their new Dream Heights app (given that it looks remarkably like their successful Tiny Towers app).
