According to NPD DisplaySearch, a company that tracks mobile PC shipments, Apple shipped a total of 23.4 million mobile PCs in the fourth quarter of 2011, a number that includes 18.7 million iPads, or 80 percent of holiday quarter shipments.

Apple’s combined shipments gave the company 26.6 percent of the mobile PC market share, which accounted for a quarterly increase of 128 percent over the same quarter in 2010. Not bad for a company that just a few years ago held single digit marketshare in this category.

Apple’s Version of “The Clone Wars”

App StoreWith one developer (Keith Shepherd, the creator of Temple Run) going so far as to accuse Apple of tainting the integrity of the App Store by allowing blatant copycat apps to be listed and thrive, many of the copycats apps have now been eliminated.

The prevalence of freemium games and in-app purchases surged in 2011, and will only continue to grow in 2012. Many developers have found the freemium model to be significantly more lucrative than a traditionally priced app thanks to in-app purchases, which can include virtual currency, additional levels, new weapons, or other similar features.

What spurs people to make in-app purchases? According to a new study of nearly 30 million in-app purchases by Localytics, a solid, positive relationship with the game and the developer is key, because it encourages long-term usage of an app. Of the iOS users who made a purchase in the study, 44 percent of them did not do so until they had used an app on 10 separate occasions.
