Trend Micro: iOS More Secure Platform than Android

According to Trend Micro chairman Steve Chang, iOS-powered devices are less prone to viruses and malware than Android smartphones and tablets.

Cheng believes that in the long run, Android is more likely to be hacked than iOS, due to the fact that its source code is open, allowing hackers to “understand the underlying architecture,” and find security holes.

iOS seems to be more immune to attacks, since Apple does not publish its source code, and thanks its ‘sandboxed’ approach.

Android Honeycomb for Tablets Trailer hits YouTube

Honeycomb for Tablets, the next generation of Android specifically built to help tablet manufacturers fight against the iPad, is getting close to being launched. Earlier today, Google offered a sneak peak of the upcoming operating system, as the search giant released a trailer to showcase the new OS’s features – note that the video was meant to be seen only by Android developers, but it was leaked in a matter of minutes.

According to the video, Honeycomb was built “entirely for tablet,” with tablet-specific optimizations, such as a completely redesigned interface, and large icons and widgets. While it is still too early to give an opinion about the new operating system, the gap between current and next generation of Android is impressive, as Honeycomb looks extremely polished, and much more user-friendly. In other words, the iPad is finally about to get some competition.

Google Planning Android Newsstand to Compete With iPad

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Google is readying a newsstand for Android devices.

This move would be Google’s direct answer to the highly rumored plans from Apple to release a digital storefront that would let newspapers and magazines sell to consumers for use on the iPad. Apple’s digital newsstand has been categorized as a dedicated news app designed specifically for the iPad, and it would resemble the iBook store and would be separate from Apple’s App Store where consumers can buy some publications today.

Vizio Enters Android Tablet Market – Will Drive Down Prices

There should be no doubt that 2011 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Android based tablets.  Manufacturers are scurrying to get their tablet plans together and prepare for release in 2011 in an attempt to put up somewhat of a fight against Apple’s iPad juggernaut.  Most manufactures had to go back to the drawing board to completely rework their tablets after the iPad was released.

One company that has taken a more thought-out approach is Vizio.  Vizio has made a name for themselves selling low-cost quality big-screen TVs and is now getting ready to branch out into the mobile device space.  According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the company will announce a new tablet computer and smart phone to compete with Apple’s iPad and iPhone.

Motorola Knocks iPad for being ‘a Giant iPhone’ in new Video

Motorola is gearing up for CES in a few weeks where it will be taking the wraps off of its previously rumored tablet.  The company began promoting its new tablet in a video released yesterday.  This new video takes a direct shot at Apple’s iPad by knocking it for simply being a “giant iPhone” and comparing it to historical stone tablets in a museum.

Motorola’s new tablet will run Android Honeycomb which is reported to be optimized for tablet devices unlike current Android versions found in other tablets.  The device should launch on the Verizon network and may include video / TV services from Verizon’s FiOS service.

Next year is shaping up to be the year of the tablet and its clear that the competition is gunning for Apple’s iPad. Motorola is not the first to go on the offensive against Apple, RIM’s CEO recently took some shots against the iPad and even claimed the upcoming RIM PlayBook was “way ahead” of the Apple Tablet.  Looks like 2011 is going to be a fun year to cover tablets.

Apple Continues to Lead Mobile Device Ad Impressions

Android devices continue to grow but when it comes to mobile advertising, Apple is still the device manufacturer to beat.  Apple maintains the largest ad impression share according to the latest Mobile Mix report from Millennial Media.

According to Millennial Media’s November report, Apple devices held three of the top 10 mobile device spots with the iPhone leading the pack.  Apple’s smartphone held 14% of the ad impression market share and the next closest device was Apple’s iPod Touch with 9% market share.  Motorola’s Droid was able to edge out RIM to earn the third spot with 7.5% of all ad impressions.

iPad & iPhone Top Google’s 2010 Most Searched List: Beats out Android & Nokia

Google just released their Zeitgeist 2010 list of the fastest rising search terms on Google this past year and Apple’s iPad and iPhone 4 topped the list.  The iPad and iPhone 4 placed one and two respectively in the “Fastest Rising in Consumer Electronics” category and the iPad was the second fastest rising search term when looking at all Google searches.

To come up with their yearly list, Google aggregates the billions of search queries people use when doing a search on Google.  As Google describes it, “the fastest rising queries are the searches that were significantly more popular in 2010 than in 2009.”

The iPad and iPhone beat out other popular consumer electronics to top the Fastest Rising in Consumer Electronics list.  The list contained only one Android device (HTC evo 4g) in the Top 10 list.  RIM was similarly underrepresented while Microsoft Windows Phone 7, Palm and WebOS didn’t even break into the Top 10 for 2010.

Google Chrome Tablets to Compete with the iPad?

If you follow the mobile market, you’re probably already aware that Google’s upcoming Android OS (Gingerbread) is being designed with tablets in mind.  But the big question on the minds of many experts is, will a possible Chrome OS also target tablets or focus exclusively on PCs and netbooks?

Google has announced a press event for tomorrow in San Francisco where they plan to share some “exciting news about Chrome.”  Chrome is Google’s web browser which competes directly against Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Apple’s Safari and the Firefox web browsers. Most analysts expect Google’s special event to focus on their much rumored Chrome OS which is said to target PCs and netbooks along with a new Chrome OS app store.

Apple Rejects Android Magazine App From App Store

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the boys in Cupertino aren’t big fans of anything to do with Google’s Android operating system. The distaste for Donut, Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread is so great, that Apple has even recently rejected an Android magazine from the Apple App Store.

Fortune Magazine reports that Mediaprovider, a small Danish publisher, was informed by Apple’s developer relations team that they would not allow their Android magazine app in the App Store. When asked by Mediaprovider’s CEO, Brian Dixon, why Apple was rejecting the app, an Apple representative simply said “you know… your magazine. It’s just about Android…. we can’t have that in our App Store.”
