Consumers love the touch screen. According to a recent report from NPD DisplaySearch, we love it so much that touch screen tablets are selling more than laptops. New tablet shipments are expected to outnumber laptops sometime this year.

NPD’s report shows that tablet shipments will increase to 256.5 million globally in 2013, a 67 percent increase over 2012. Even more impressive is that they are expected to more than double that number to 579.4 million by 2017.

Wee You-Things Blends Top-Notch Design With Touching Message — iPad App Review

weeytappRaising consciousness is dicey business. Kids can detect hokiness and fakery with sophistication that belies their years, so the most successful way to teach character building is often to put it into an irresistible package. Wee You-Things, a universal app designed by Wee Society, shares its message of accepting differences using colorful graphics, humor, and a seamless UI.

Wee Society’s tongue-in-cheek pledge sums up Wee You-Things’ philosophy: “We not-so-solemnly swear to help bring kids and their parents closer together with happy apps, artful activities and tales to transfix short attention spans.

Meet RP-VITA, the New Face of Telemedicine, iPad Included

rpvitawalk
As we reported, telemedicine took a giant leap forward when the FDA approved an iPad toting robot that its creators believe will aid in patient care. iRobot (of Roomba fame) and InTouch Health teamed up to develop the RP-VITA, a robot with self-navigation capabilities and iPad integration that brings the doctor to the patient for virtual bedside care. The RP-VITA will soon see use in 7 different medical centers in the US and Mexico.

The RP-VITA causes almost no disruption to the routines of hospital staff, so rather than being the center of attention, RP-VITA’s creators hope that the technology will work so seamlessly that it will recede into the background allowing physicians and hospital staff to focus on the patient.

Apple Rejects Social App Discover Apps, AppShopper in Danger … Again

AppShopper LogoApple’s Terms and Conditions regulation 2.25 has really caused a stir in the app development world. In October, the iOS creator updated its policy to restrict apps that “display Apps other than your own for purchase or promotion in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store.” Since then, popular app discovery services like AppShopper and AppGratis have lost their battle with Apple and have had their applications pulled.

Recently, AppShopper made it back into the App Store with a revised version of the discovery service that includes social sharing. Apparently, the way to get around the problem with Apple’s Regulation 2.25 is to make it social. AppShopper Social launched two weeks ago,  but may already be in jeopardy of losing its place in the App Store.

Rumor of the Day: iPad mini to Launch at WWDC, Sans Retina

ipadminiApple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is only a month away. Tech analysts are full of idea for what the iPad maker will present at the keynote address. It is known that Apple plans to demonstrate iOS 7 sometime at the conference, but what about a sneak-peak at a new product, or even a refresh of a current device? According to NPD DisplaySearch, a refresh is on the table for the June 10 developer meet-up.

Late last night, CNet reported that NPD analyst Richard Shim told the tech site that we can expect to see two iPad mini refreshes over the next 12 months. The first update will be sometime in the “second half of this year,” while the second will happen in the first quarter of 2014.

Cult of Mac pointed out that it is possible that the first refresh will be announced at this year’s WWDC, since Apple already has the tech world’s attention. This version will include an update to the processor so that it will be a speedier device. However, rumors are spreading that iPad mini parts manufacturers aren’t even close to being ready to manufacture the smaller-sized Retina display panel, so we can’t expect to see that model until the first quarter of 2014, at the earliest.
