Apple’s iPad Turns Three Today, Happy Birthday

iPad iPad miniThree years ago, Apple held a product launch event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. It was a weekday in January. I was at work, but watched live feeds of the announcement from various blogs and websites I followed. The rumor that Apple would be launching a tablet was already so prevalent that, when it was officially announced, no one was surprised.

When I first learned about the iPad, I thought the name was stupid and that it was nothing more than a giant iPod touch. Who needs it, right? Within a few days, I had changed my tune and decided I would preorder it.

Apple Sued for Trademark Infringement by Hearing Aid Company

earpodsApple’s lawyers sure do manage to keep busy! Earlier this week, Apple was sued by a Chinese film studio for selling pirated movies without permission, and today, a hearing aid company has sued Apple for trademark infringement over the snazzy new headphones that it released alongside the iPhone 5 in September, which it happened to name EarPods.

According to Randolph Divisions, a company that produces a digital hearing aid called the “HearPod,” the name EarPod is just to similar to its own name. As a result, the company has filed a trademark lawsuit against Apple in the Hawaii District Court in Honolulu. At least those lawyers get to travel to some fantastic locations, right?

Will Apple be able to ‘Bounce Back’ From Latest Patent Problem

US Patent and Trademark OfficeYesterday, we reported that Apple was denied a trademark on the iPad mini nomenclature. While it may have seemed like an April Fools’ joke, it wasn’t. Today, CNet is reporting that the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) has reaffirmed the invalidation it issued last October for a patent that Apple was using to sue Samsung. It seems like the USPTO is on the warpath against Apple right now.

According to CNet, the USPTO issued a First Office Action last October on Apple’s ‘381 patent, which covers the “bounce-back” that users see when they scroll to the bottom of a screen. The First Office Action rejected all claims of the patent, even after a Federal jury had considered it valid. The USPTO recently re-examined the patent and issued a Final Office Action today.
