Rumor of the Day: Imminent iPad Production Points to Fall Launch for 5th Gen

iPad 5 mockup 1Rumors of the, yet to be announced, fifth-generation iPad are reaching a fevered pitch as more and more suppliers are claiming that production of a new model Apple tablet is about to get underway. A few weeks ago, we heard that Apple would be holding a special event on June 29 and just last week, Best Buy and Walmart drastically reduced the price of their iPad devices, making us think they may be making room on store shelves for a new model.

Today, DigiTimes is reporting that suppliers are gearing up for mass production of the fifth-generation iPad starting in July, which is right on track for a fall launch.

Apple Seeking Software Engineer to Join Fingerprint Sensor Team

fingerprintOver the weekend, Apple added a new job listing to its website, seeking a software engineer in Melbourne, Florida, which is where the company’s AuthenTec team is based. Apple originally purchased mobile security company AuthenTec last summer for $365 million.

At the time, AuthenTec was known for manufacturing embeddable fingerprint sensors for security and identification purposes. After the acquisition, rumors that Apple was going to incorporate the fingerprint sensing technology into future iPads and iPhones ramped up.

Apple Pulls Discovery App AppGratis from iTunes

appgratisOver the weekend, Apple yanked a popular app from its App Store. AppGratis is an app service that offers up app suggestions and teams up with developers in order to provide both discounted apps and free apps for its users. Before being pulled, AppGratis was an immensely popular app and the company behind it recently earned more than $13 million from investors.

In October of last year, Apple introduced a new rule that stated that iOS developers should avoid producing apps that were designed to aggregate other apps. “Apps that display Apps other than your own for purchase or promotion in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store will be rejected.”

USPTO Withdraws Objections to iPad mini Trademark, Apple Gets the All Clear

ipadminiLast week we reported that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had denied Apple’s trademark application for the iPad mini name because it “merely describes a feature of characteristic of the applicant’s goods.” According to the USPTO, the name was merely a descriptor rather than a unique product name.

Apple was given until July to address the concerns that the USPTO examiner found, but as it turns out, the Cupertino-based company will not need to fight for the iPad mini trademark. A newly published document from the USPTO from last Wednesday reveals that the office withdrew its objections over the iPad mini trademark.
