Now that people are getting their iPads, we thought it would be good to start an iPad Quick Tips series to help users get the most out of their new gadget. We’ll post our tips on a regular basis so keep coming back to find out the latest tricks and tips.

Find Applications Fast: If you’ve loaded your iPad with a bunch of apps, you might like a faster way of finding that one special app. Your iPad’s Spotlight feature can help you find and open apps quickly.

To search the names of all apps installed on your iPad, simply enter the application name in the Spotlight search box. Then tap on the results to open the corresponding application. Finding your apps has never been easier.

Force keyboard to appear: If you regularly use an external Bluetooth keyboard you’ve probably noticed that the iPad’s onscreen keyboard doesn’t work when the two are paired. If your iPad is paired with a Bluetooth keyboard and you want to use the onscreen keyboard instead, simply press the Eject key on the Bluetooth keyboard and your onscreen keyboard should now appear.

Erase Your Footsteps: Sometimes you might need to erase your tracks when surfing the web. On your Mac or PC that’s a fairly straight forward process. We are here to show you how easy it is to get this done on your new iPad.

Go to Settings and select Safari from the menu on the left. Now simply tap on the buttons labeled “Clear History”, “Clear Cookies” and “Clear Cache” to have your web trail instantly erased.

Clearing the iPad’s Cache may also help when you are experiencing issues with a particular web page.

Grab an Image: Let’s say you’re surfing the web and come across a picture that you want to e-mail to a buddy, how do you do it? Simply find the image you’re interested in and then touch and hold the image, then tap Save Image. The photo is automatically saved in to your photo library. From here you can share the image with friends via e-mail or your Mobile Me gallery.

Special Characters: If you ever wanted to show your character, this next tip is for you. The iPad’s keyboard holds many undiscovered secrets including an entire set of special characters and accents (diacritic). To access these new characters, simply bring up the keyboard and hold down a key such as a U or O. You’ll see a menu pop-up with additional variations of that character. One of the best shortcuts is holding down the .com key, when in Safari or Mail, to get a set of additional domains such as .edu, .org and .net.

Instant iPod Control: Have you ever been listening to music on your iPad while in another app? If so, I bet there have been times when you wanted to quickly skip a track or pause the song and had to get out of the app you’re in, go find the iPod app and then take care of your music. There’s a much easier way to handle this situation.

First make sure iPod Control is enabled on your iPad. Select General > Home in your iPad settings, then turn iPod Controls on or off to display iPod controls. You now can pop-up iPod controls at any time when you’re listening to music and using another application, even when the iPad is locked, by simply double-clicking the Home button. Rock on!

Locking your iPad: If you want to keep prying eyes out of your iPad, why not lock it up? You can set the iPad with a four digit passcode and keep people from snooping through your iPad.

Once you set your iPad with a passcode, you will need to enter it every time the iPad is brought out of sleep mode. To turn on the Passcode Lock feature, tap the Settings icon on the iPad Home Screen. Choose General > Passcode Lock and enter a 4-digit passcode, then enter the passcode again to verify it.

Changing Wallpapers: If you wan’t to customize your iPad, why not swap out your iPad’s Home Screen or Lock Screen Wallpaper? You can choose from one of the many photos Apple has preloaded on the iPad or you can select any image from your iPad’s Photo Library.

To set a new Wallpaper, tap the Settings icon on your Home Screen and then choose Wallpaper from the list. Now simply select which image to use and if you would like it used for the Lock Screen, Home Screen or both.

Grow Your Dock: Chances are you only have 4 icons (Safari, Mail, Photos and iPod) sitting in the dock on your iPad’s Home screen. If you want to give these 4 lonely guys some friends, then this tip is for you!

Taking Screenshots: Have you ever wanted to capture what was happening on your iPad’s screen? With the iPad’s built-in screenshot feature, you’re able to take full 768 x 1024 snapshots of all the action.

To use the screenshot feature, simultaneously hold the iPad’s Power button and Home button down for a second and then release. When you release the buttons, you’ll see the screen flash and hear a camera shutter click. The screenshot will be stored in your Photos library and can then easily be exported or mailed.

Fast access to your favorite websites: You can create shortcuts to your favorite websites using the iPad’s Web clips feature. Web clips appear as icons on your iPad’s Home screen and you can rearrange them the same way you do other apps.

To add a web clip simply open the webpage you’d like to add, tap the “+” button located on the top of the Safari and then tap “Add to Home Screen” from the menu .

Force Quit an Application: If an application you are using freezes, you can force your iPad to quit the app. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the application you were using quits.

Bookmarking in iBooks: You can easily insert a bookmark while reading your book in iBooks. Simply touch and hold any word on the page and then tap Bookmark. To remove the bookmark, touch and hold the bookmarked word and then tap Delete.

Quick Web Scrolling: If you’re browsing a long webpage in Safari and want to get back to the top of the page quickly, simply tap the Status Bar at the top of your browser to be whisked back to the beginning of the web page you’re viewing.

Quick Mute: Unlike the iPhone, the iPad does not have a mute button. A quick way to get the volume down is to simply hold the volume down button for about one second and the iPad instantly turns the sound all the way off. Insta-Mute!
