Can Your iPad Tell You if the End of the World is Coming?

mayanPerhaps the rock band REM said it best when they sang that “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” Or maybe it’s one of the (many) jokes going around that suggests the Myans knocked off early to go for a beer while working on their calendar, stating that if it didn’t get done it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Some people are panicking, some are ignoring it and some are choosing to have some fun with the whole idea (Kraft Canada has even offered free samples of Kraft Dinner – Macaroni and Cheese for those Canadians who wish to make it their last meal).

But the real question on all of our minds: how can we involve our iPads in this impending doom? Fortunately, we have a few suggestions for you.

iPad and iPhone Chips Production Expected to Move to a New US-Based Plant

200px-PinkAzaleaWhen you hear the codename “Project Azalea,” the first thing that may come to mind is a James Bond style action movie.

While economic development opportunities on United States soil may be exciting by some measures, the reality of this project is far less mysterious: it is expected that this term is referencing Apple’s efforts to move chip production to North America. If the rumors prove true, New York, California, Texas and Oregon are competing to become home to a “major semiconductor manufacturer.”

Revamped iPad Mini Likely to Have Retina Display

This isn’t the first time we have heard the rumor that the next version of the iPad Mini will include a Retina display. Most analysts and consumers alike are a little confused as to why the smaller-form-factor iPad didn’t include Retina to begin with– it’s certainly becoming an Apple standard issue feature, seen in the last few generations of the regular-sized iPad and the iPhone (not to mention the recent upgrades to the display options from the MacBook Pro lineup).

Google Maps App Out for iPhone, iPad Version Coming

gmapsOne, two, three… everybody breathe a collective sigh of relief. After much weeping, crying and gnashing of teeth over the replacement of Google Maps with the oh-so-hated Apple Maps, the navigational security blanket has returned. Thank you Google! (for those of you who couldn’t care less and happen to have no issues with Apple Maps, the download is optional so don’t worry about it)

Fortunately for those who loved the old Google Maps app, the new one is much the same. While Google claims to have started from scratch with this one, the most talked-about addition seems to be the turn-by-turn directions –the previous exclusion of which is rather ironically the feature that Apple claims as the reason for migrating away from Google’s mapping product to begin with.
