Reddit might be the most popular Internet website aggregate ever. The barebones website lists tens of thousands of articles every day that are user submitted and mostly a complete waste of time, but fun just the same. Reddit has no official iOS app. Maybe that’s because the website is so simplistic that it isn’t difficult to see the same thing on smaller screens without needing any special designs.
Today, the company launched an official app specifically for catching up on the website’s popular Ask Me Anything (AMA) question and answer sessions. Unfortunately, it isn’t optimized for the iPad. However, I’ve been reading it on my 9.7-inch screen in 2X zoom mode, and it doesn’t look half bad.
When you first open the app, you’ll see the AMAs listed by what is trending (or “hot”). You can browse recent and active AMAs, or find Q&As that fit your mood. AMAs are also listed by category. Tap the Reddit logo in the upper left corner to view AMAs in entertainment, science/tech, music, politics, sports, games, literature, journalism, experiences, business, travel, food, academic, arts, trades, nonprofit, crime, military, or general. Select a category to see AMAs and then pick one to read the Q&A.
You can also view AMAs by most popular. President Barrack Obama’s AMA from two years ago is currently the most popular with Sir David Attenborough in second place and Bill Gates in third. If you are wondering whether Apple CEO Tim Cook every participated in an AMA, you can search for him by name. He hasn’t yet.
Reddit’s AMAs have been taking place since 2006 and include celebrities, like Bill Murray, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Robin Williams. They also feature Q&A sessions with unknown everyday people with interesting stories, like someone who was mauled by a bear and someone who was on a hijacked plane.
From the Reddit blog:
“AMAs get a lot of attention outside of reddit, and often you’ll see “Top 10 answers or moments to [insert name of celebrity or person]’s AMA.” While those recaps may be good for those who cannot follow AMAs as they happen live, there is so much more to AMAs that those brief excerpts cannot convey. One of the best parts of AMAs is experiencing the complete spectrum of questions and answers with full context. With this app, we want to share more about what reddit is all about, so people can find and enjoy a wider variety of AMAs as they are happening.”
The app includes the following features:
- Keep up to date with all the latest AMA interviews
- Ask a question when someone is marked as ACTIVE
- Get notified when popular AMAs are trending
- See every answered question in an easy-to-read format perfect for mobile
- Vote questions and answers up and down to help prioritize the best content
- Explore diverse topics like Entertainment, Science and Politics
Ask Me Anything – official reddit AMA app is available on the iPhone. It is currently not optimized for the iPad. However, since the website is mostly text-based, you can still enjoy the AMA experience without suffering graphics breakdown. Hopefully, Reddit will update the app for the iPad in the future.
