iPad Roadmap Show New iPad Air this Year but no iPad Pro or iPad mini until 2015

iPad Mini

MacRumors has published comments from a new research note by KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo which suggest that Apple is not going to release an iPad Pro or a new iPad Mini until at least 2015. While I believe that it is unlikely that an iPad Pro will be released, it is hard to fathom the Mini going a entire year without an update.

“Compared with lower-margin iPad mini with Retina display, which shipments has been tepid, higher-margin iPad Air was a hot selling item in 4Q13, which will slow Apple in developing new iPad mini models. We believe Apple plans to launch upgraded iPad Air early this year, and will accelerate development of 12.9” iPad. As such, more resources will be allocated to these two products, which will affect the progress of the development of new iPad mini. All told, we think chances of the debut of a new iPad mini in 2H14 are slim. In addition, the 12.9” iPad is unlikely to be offered in 2014. For these reasons, we predict the only new iPad product in 2H14 will be the upgraded iPad Air.”

In fact, it is the slightly lower shipment numbers of the iPad Mini that lead me to believe a new version is coming alongside an updated iPad Air. The Mini has such strong potential but is missing some key features that are likely to be implemented with the hope that it will sell better in an increasingly tough market.

It is hard to listen to analysts these days because it seems they are guessing as much as the next person, but Kuo is well respected and has a track record of accurate analysis. Other topics included the fade out of iPad 2 production and the ramping up of iPad 4 production. Overall nothing too exciting, but the lack of iPad news means that there are other new and exciting products coming in other fields from Apple.

I was going to pick up an ipad air tomorrow. Maybe I should wait a few weeks?

If you waited for the newest device to come from Apple, you would always be waiting. I suggest you look into the specs of the current iPad Air. If it fits your needs and seems like something you want, go for it. I purchased a 3rd-gen iPad a few months before the 4th-gen iPad and didn’t regret it. My tablet worked great and the faster processor chip of the 4th-gen didn’t affect me at all.

Thanks, Lory. I guess I just don’t want to purchase one and miss out on an upgrade by 1 month.

The more I read the more unlikely it seems. There would at least be some leaked photos at this point if there was an impending update.

I agree, James. I don’t want to tell you that this rumor is not likely to be true, just to have you buy your tablet now and see a new version in a month. However, I doubt Apple will launch another one before the fall. That’s just my opinion. :)
