I love Spotify. I listen to new music all of the time from my desktop or laptop computer. However, I don’t listen to it on my iPad. At least, I hadn’t in the past. That is going to change today. According to the company’s blog, mobile Spotify is now available for free on tablet devices. Sort of.
When you listen to Spotify on your desktop, you can pick a song or artist and listen to an album or playlist specific to your search. The mobile app lets you listen to shuffled playlists and music from certain artists, but not in an “on demand” capacity.
According to Spotify:
- Your music: Listen to all the playlists you’ve created and playlists from the people you follow. Spotify lets you discover new music, save, shuffle and share.
- Your favourite artists: Want to listen to a certain artist? Just hit shuffle play, sit back and listen to their entire catalogue. Don’t settle for something similar. Don’t settle for just one track from the artist you want to hear every 20 minutes.
- Discover great new playlists: Going for a jog or to the gym? We’ve got the playlist to help you go the extra mile. We know you just want the perfect music for a specific moment in time – and we’ve got you covered. There’s something for every mood, genre or moment.
Of course, I immediately downloaded Spotify on my iPad after reading the news. However, I had a really hard time finding the shuffle feature. First of all, you have to have the “Now Playing” window open. After you search for an album or artist, play a station based on that artist. Then, open the Now Playing window by tapping the two outward facing arrows next to the album artwork at the bottom left side of the screen. If shuffle is available, the crossover arrows that represent shuffling will appear just above the pause/play buttons. The controls are black-on-black and difficult to see.
Currently, the shuffle feature that allows you to listen to specific artists and albums that you search for is only available on tablets. Which is nice, considering so many companies tend to start with apps for iPhone and then make us wait months, or even years, before finally optimizing it for the iPad.
Spotify is free to download and available in the App Store. For full mobile access to all of Spotify’s features, subscribe to the premium service for $9.99 per month.
