It is time to get to know your iPad all over again. Thank goodness. I was starting to run out of things to talk about in this column. Each week, we offer tips, tricks, and advice on how to use your iPad to its fullest potential. Now that iOS 7 has dropped, many of you are going to be wondering what happened to all of the features you were used to.
I’ll be using my mom as a barometer to figure out what you might be confused about. She hates iOS 7 and it is my goal to make her love it by helping her find out what has happened to all of her favorite features.
This week, we are going to talk about Spotlight Search. When you first downloaded and installed iOS 7, Apple was kind enough to let you know that Spotlight Search has moved. If you were like me, you just tapped the “Dismiss” button without even reading it.
I vaguely recalled something about dragging your finger downward on the Home screen. So, when I wanted to use it, I placed my finger at the top of my screen and dragged it downward. The only thing I saw was my Notification Center.
O.K., so maybe I was supposed to drag my finger upward. Nope. That brings up the Control Center. It took me a while to figure it out. If you are having the same problem, I have the solution.
You have to drag your finger downward from the center of the screen. Well, it doesn’t have to be the dead center, but you can’t drag your finger from the top of the screen or you will pull down the Notification Center. If you place your finger toward the middle of the screen when you drag it downward, you won’t accidentally call up Notification Center.
Spotlight Search lets you find everything that is in your iPad. Whether you are looking for someone’s contact information, an app, a movie, a song, an event, or even a book, just start typing in the name and everything with that word in it will come up in Spotlight Search. I never realized how often I use the feature until I couldn’t figure out where it was, especially now that iOS 7 has moved some things around.
So, if you tapped the “Dismiss” button without reading that message when it popped up, you’ll be fine as long as you drag your finger from the middle of any Home Screen instead of the top when you want to call up Spotlight Search.
