Much Rumored Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Finally Available On iPad

Knights-of-the-Old-Republic-star-wars-9368710-1280-960Recently, rumors began to swirl that the most popular Star Wars game of the decade would soon be ported to the iPad. While it seemed like a pipe dream only a few days ago, yesterday, Fans of the Jedi vs. Sith story were treated with the best surprise that iOS could offer. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) is now available for the iPad.

Aspyr, the company that developed the iPad version of the game, announced yesterday that KotOR had launched in the App Store. Sure enough, if you visited the App Store yesterday, you would have seen that the game is one of Apple’s Editor’s Choice winners for this week. Well, of course it is.

The epic Star Wars adventure first launched for Xbox and PC in 2003. A decade later, the adventure has won the hearts of many gamers across the globe. Yesterday’s launch puts KotOR into the hands of a new generation of mobile gamers for the first time ever. The game has never been ported to another handheld game device.

“Being able to bring one of the most beloved Star Wars games to iPad for such a momentous event is an incredible honor,” said Elizabeth Howard, Aspyr’s Vice President of Publishing. “We have a long history at Aspyr of bringing the best games to Apple platforms, and as bona fide fans of the original release, we’ve worked to ensure that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for iPad lives up to its prodigious reputation.”

The release of KotOR for the iPad marks a momentous occasion for the mobile gaming industry. It has been argued that the iOS platform couldn’t handle the gaming power of full-featured games like these. If KotOR does well, we may see many more ports of powerful games like it in the future.

The game is nearly 2GB but requires about twice as much space to download. Even though the app’s summary states that you will need 2.5GB of space, I wasn’t able to begin the download until I had made room for about 4GB. Of course, you could download it to your computer first and then sync it to your iPad. Check out our tutorial on how to sync apps through iTunes on your computer.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available for the second-generation iPad and higher for $9.99. Download it in the App Store today.
