On this, the third birthday of the iPad, Best Buy celebrates by sending the third-generation model to the clearance rack. It is either a great sale or a sad affair for the tablet that was only on top for seven months. If you haven’t upgraded from the iPad 2 yet, you can now get the soon-to-be obsolete model from Best Buy for less than the price of the iPad 2. If Best Buy is trying to clear room on their shelves, it may be a sign that they are expecting to add a new fifth-generation model soon.
Starting today, Best Buy is offering 30 percent off of all iPad 3 models. So, you could purchase a 16GB Wi-Fi only model for only $314. Not only is that less expensive than the iPad 2, but it is also cheaper than the 16GB iPad mini. A Retina display screen device is cheaper than a non-Retina display screen device.
This is probably the biggest sale the third-generation iPad has ever seen. Maybe Best Buy knows something that the rest of us have only speculated on. Maybe Apple will be launching a fifth-generation iPad soon and Best Buy wants to sell off the older models in a hurry.
Products are limited, so you’d better get shopping if you want your choice of models and sizes. Currently, you can still order the 16GB Wi-Fi only model in black or white for $314. The Wi-Fi + Cellular models are only $405. All models and sizes are currently still available up to the 64GB Wi-Fi only model for $454.99 (almost $200 off the retail price) and the 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model for $545.99.
Just to put it in perspective, the 16GB Wi-Fi only third-generation iPad went on sale last March for $499. Today, Best Buy is selling the 64GB model for $50 less than the smallest model sold for only one year ago.
