New Apple Patent Makes Your iPad Shake, Vibrator Mode Coming Soon

iPad VibratorWhen you get alerts on your iPhone, you can set your notifications to make your device buzz. This is mainly so that, when you set your phone to “silent mode” you can still know about a text or other alert by the vibration. The iPad doesn’t come with vibrator mode. Presumably, the developers of Apple’s tablet didn’t think anyone would be trying to stuff a 10-inch device in their back pockets and figured there was no reason to include the physical alert feature on the iPad.

However, those of us who play games on our tablets know that vibrator mode is a must-have feature for a full experience. Luckily, Apple realized that too and has submitted an application for vibrator mode on the iPad.

According to Patently Apple, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office published an application from Apple for an audio codec (dual channel audio coder decoder) with vibrator support. The system would have two output pins that would be used to drive a pair of speakers in stereo mode, or a vibrator and single speaker in mono mode. Each channel would have its own Digital-to-Analog converter and audio power amplifier.

The patent’s background includes references to playing games, making phone calls, and playing media on mobile devices. Apple points out that the vibrator technology that already exists in iPhones and iPod devices would not work in an iPad because “the dedicated vibrator signal channel would not be used.”

The patent calls for a multi-channel codec integrated circuit chip that is capable of driving the speaker and/or vibrator simultaneously through the same output pins.

While it may not be necessary to have vibrator mode on an iPad for the purposes of sending alerts to the user, it would be awesome to have “shock” mode for playing certain epic video games. It would be like playing games on your home console, only using the iPad as a controller.
