Mini Ninjas is a super fun dojo-themed endless runner that’s fast-paced, challenging, and addictive. One of my favorite endless running games is FANTASYxRUNNERs, and Mini Ninjas highly reminds me of that app. Not only are you running and jumping to avoid obstacles, you’re also attacking to slaughter your enemies.
This game sucked me in right from the beginning thanks to the impressive 3D graphics and the authentic dojo environment. The main ninja character is adorably cute, as are the other characters that can be unlocked.
Endless runners all have the same standard controls and Mini Ninjas is no exception. You will tap on the left side of the screen to jump, tap twice to run along walls, and hit the attack button on the right side of the screen to defeat approaching enemies. These controls are suitable, but they are not quite as responsive as the controls in similar endless running games, which can be off putting at times.
The idea is to avoid obstacles like rocks and fires while using your ninja skills to defeat your foes. Because this game requires a fair amount of multitasking, it’s a bit more difficult than your typical endless runner, but it’s more fun.
As with most of these games, you will have a series of goals to complete. For example, you might be instructed to run a certain distance or destroy several boulders. You’re also tasked with freeing cute little animals like bunnies, which adds to your magical powers, aka “Kuji energy.”
When you have built up enough energy you can perform a special ability or attack, which can help you get further in the game. Your main character, Kunoichi, has a tornado special attack that will send him spinning across the screen, avoiding enemy attacks.
In addition to freeing animals, you will also need to snap up gold coins. Coins are used to purchase potions and spells in addition to extra outfits and new weapons. Potions, unfortunately, take some time to brew, which can be sped up with an additional in-app purchase.
Later in the game, you will be able to unlock different characters to play. While your initial ninja has the ability to run along wall, other ninjas can glide through the air, destroy rocks, and collect more coins.
Aside from the slight control issues, Mini Ninjas is a fun endless runner. In the future, Square Enix plans to add the ability to possess the animals that you’ve freed, taking on their form and using their special attacks, which will make the game even more fun.
What I liked: Mini Ninjas has ultra cute graphics. I loved the concept of freeing the caged animals.
What I didn’t like: For a portion of the game, you’re running against a dark background with a dark character. It can be hard to see where you’re going. I was also hoping for more responsive controls, and the wait times for crafting potions is a bit excessive.
To buy or not to buy: Mini Ninjas is a solid endless runner. It’s a bit more challenging than other similar games because of the controls, which makes it more suitable for experienced players.
