Angry Birds Goes Free for the First Time Ever, Will Be Named App of the Week

If you are one of the few people left in the world that has not yet purchased the original Angry Birds title, you are in luck. For the first time in its existence, Rovio Games has made the most popular game in the App Store free.
Tech Crunch has also reported confirmation from the indie game developer that Angry Birds will be made App of the Week in the App Store starting later today.
Although the physics-based bird slinging casual game has soared to great heights in popularity, the original title has lost its appeal to the masses. Or, maybe its just that everyone in the entire world who owns a mobile device has already downloaded the game. It sure seems that way, at least.
In addition to Angry Birds, Rovio Games has collaborated with the movie industry to bring us Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Star Wars, each a popular game on their own. Additionally, the company recently announced an upcoming Web cartoon series called “Angry Birds Toons” and there have been rumors swirling around for months that a full-length feature film is in the works.
Tech Crunch points out that this first-time price drop for the original game comes as Rovio’s titles are losing popularity. At the beginning of March, Rovio fell from the top 80 highest grossing iPhone apps, something that hasn’t happened since May of 2010.
It is possible that the game development company is trying to generate new interest by offering its original title for free. A tactic that seems to be working since it has also been confirmed by Rovio that Apple will be naming Angry Birds the App of the Week for this week.
The app is normally $0.99 for the iPhone and $2.99 for the iPad. Along with a price drop, today’s update includes 15 new levels. So, not only are you getting a three dollar game for free, you are getting more bang for your buck. Download Angry Birds HD for the iPad in the App Store today.
