Trenches II is a real time strategy that focuses on World War I, which is an atypical choice for a war game. In this app, the war is storming across Europe and it’s your job to battle against enemy forces.
This is a lane defense style game, which means you have a bunker on one end while the enemy has another bunker on the other end. The idea is to create minions at a rapid pace, which then advance forward attacking any foes in their path.
In Trenches, you can choose to play as American, French, German, or British. There are also three different difficulty levels, which means the game is suitable for beginners to advanced players.
No matter what team you choose, the layout of the game is similar, though each team will have different special abilities. To create soldiers, you will tap on the icons at the bottom of the screen. These icons represent different types of fighters, from simple gunners to cavalry and healers.
The strategy part in the game requires you to decide which minions to use and when, in order to defeat the particular types of enemies that are attacking.
Controls in Trenches II are fairly simple. For example, you just tap and swipe to create and move fighters and use a sky swipe to move the camera so you can see the entire field of battle.
Fighters are created in groups of three. When you have a group, you can drag on them to move them to attack or in trenches to defend. Your soldiers will not move on their own, so you need to keep a close eye on their activities in order to be successful.
You also need to manage your resources, because each soldier requires gold to summon, and you also need to pay attention to upgrades (applied by your engineers), which will make your fighters more efficient.
Winning battles will reward you with perk points, which are used to unlock additional troops and apply upgrades to your current troops.
Trenches II is a fairly standard real time strategy game, but the need to avoid enemy fire and traps along with the different types of fighters keeps it fast-paced and enthralling.
This is, of course, a freemium game, which means that you need to pay out cash if you want to progress quickly. Cash buys the perk points that buy upgrades, which can make the game easier if it is becoming too tough.
There are over 50 locations to beat in Trenches II. When you finish the main campaign you can go on to play multiplayer, which means there’s enough gameplay to keep you occupied for quite some time.
What I liked: Trenches II has engrossing gameplay and impressive cartoon-style graphics. The game looks great, which is always a prerequisite to keeping players on the hook.
What I didn’t like: For some reason, the upgrade buttons that instructed my engineers and other troops to perform tasks were incredibly small. This made it hard to complete some actions in the game. I also felt like the game did not supply enough information on the abilities of each individual fighter type, and the tutorial was a bit confusing.
To buy or not to buy: If you are a fan of war games and have some time to invest in a strategy game, Trenches II is a solid choice. You can’t beat the price!
