The App Store has so many awesome new apps coming out every week, it is nearly impossible to keep track of them all. One way Apple tries to help out is to spotlight a game or app (sometimes both) that is especially good. Last week, Cordy 2 was given the honor of being the App Store’s Editor’s Choice. This week, Apple chose another platformer with excellent graphics and exciting action. Rock Runners will have you tapping your way through obstacle courses and zooming across the universe.
Players control Hasty Harry as he speeds across the screen in this side-scrolling auto-run game. He jumps, swings, and shoots through portals on his way across the galaxy. Each world has a goal- get the power coil and get to the ship so you can make it to the next world.
Some levels are easy and some are more treacherous. You can skip the super difficult ones if you’ve created a path around them. However, eventually, you’ll need to play the power coil level, which is always super hard, and then make it to the ship. You may as well practice your jumps as you go along.
Harry automatically runs. The only thing you have to do is tap the screen to make him jump. It’s all about timing here. If you jump too soon, you may end up in purple goo, and you don’t want that. If you jump too late, you may miss the electrified rope that will swing you across big gaps.
The action is fast-paced. Players have to be quick on their feet to get all of the gems, plus the hidden bonus items, in a single run. There are giant gems and golden keys that you’ll need in other parts of the game. Grab them along the way and use them to unlock new levels.
It is obvious that the “Editors” in charge of choosing each week’s game love great graphics and Rock Runner is no different. The space-miner themed graphics are fantastic and the gameplay is smooth.
This game is so easy, you can play it while watching Star Trek, but so fun you won’t want to put it down until your fingers are sweaty from holding your iPad for too long.
Rock Runners is only $0.99 and available now in the App Store. Pick it up today if you want to have something to do during those boring staff meetings this week.
