Frog Orbs is a simple arcade game for the iPad, where the goal is to tap to hurl damaging stars at approaching enemies, which are called Benglings. Because this is a straightforward arcade game, the plot isn’t important – all you need to know is that you’re a frog, you have orbs that store magic, and you have enemies to destroy.
The Benglings will approach at a rapid rate, and the idea is to tap on them to fire off spells, which kill them. If they get to the frog or the four orbs that he is protecting, you will take damage. Getting hit three times will end the game.
Each orb represents a different element, such as fire, earth, air, and water. Tap and hold on an orb to switch spells. Each spell has a different effect. For example, earth will put up barriers, while fire is damaging. It’s important to use the spells effectively, especially as you face different types of enemies.
There are 20 different enemies in all and some are more vulnerable to certain elements. You will also find that there are 12 different spells to unlock throughout the course of the game.
Some enemies are faster than others, so prioritization and the proper use of spells are the key to surviving. Take out the fast moving Benglings first, or risk death. As the game progresses, it gets harder and harder to survive each onslaught of attacks. When you run out of hearts, you will start over again from the beginning, which means that there isn’t a whole lot of depth to this game. It’s essentially straight attacking, rinse and repeat.
Because this is a free game, there’s an in-app currency of flies. Tap flies when you see them during the course of the game, because they are used to unlock power ups. You won’t get a lot of flies, though, because obviously the developers want you to purchase more with real cash.
Though you are replaying the same level over and over again, there are different goals to earn each time, which gives you something to strive for as you play. The game has 200 goals to earn, plus Game Center achievements, which makes the repetitive gameplay more tolerable.
If you enjoy arcade-style action games where survival is the ultimate goal, then you will likely have fun playing Frog Orbs.
What I liked: The game is fast-paced and fun in short bursts of time.
What I didn’t like: I experienced a lot of crashes on my iPad mini, and I felt like the flies were not given out freely enough. The game is not Retina ready and does not look good on the Retina iPad.
To buy or not to buy: Frog Orbs is a free download that’s worthwhile for arcade game lovers.
