Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, with just a few days to go until the big day. It’s the perfect time to play a fun love-and-hearts themed iPad game to get into the holiday spirit, which My Love My Valentine delivers.
My Love My Valentine is a casual game that’s filled with hearts, flowers, cupids, and other lovey-dovey things. It bills itself as a game of love and romance, and it has a fun gameplay mechanic to go along with its sappy sweet theme.
Gameplay consists of writing love messages that are delivered by a dove to your sweetheart, who is also entertaining the affections of another, your rival. Because you have an opponent, you need to write quickly, sending out those love letters as fast as possible.
Your rival is going to work hard to stop you from getting in contact with your sweetheart by flinging obstacles your way. Expect to encounter burning matchsticks, fireballs, pigeons, and mice, all of which are out to stop you from finding your one true love.
You will start out the game by entering your own name, your sweetheart’s name, and your rival’s name. Since it’s gender non-specific, anyone can play My Love My Valentine.
To play, you will write letters by dragging the pen to the notepaper, which constructs a missive of love. The finished message must then be dragged into an envelope, closed, and handed off to Snowy the dove for delivery. All of these goals are accomplished with simple touch gestures.
All of the components for your love letters float down from the sky, so you must watch for them and put the required elements together while avoiding the obstacles sent down by your opponent.
You will win a level when you manage to send the required number of messages before your rival sends them. If your rival manages to send the messages before you, it will end the level, as will a fireball that comes in contact with your precious pen.
This is a simple game, which consists mostly of just dragging items around the screen. Since it is easy to play, it’s the perfect game for kids. Even in later levels, it’s not terribly difficult, which also means that it’s not exactly tons of fun, either.
I’ll be honest – My Love My Valentine probably isn’t a game that you would want to play at any other time of the year, and there are far better games to play in the App Store, but it is a worthwhile download if you’re looking for a holiday appropriate game to play, either for yourself or for the kids.
As a bonus, after you play each level you can send your beloved Valentine’s Day emails, filled with sappy graphics and love notes like “When someone speaks and you hear music, when someone smiles and you see roses bloom, you are in love.”
What I liked: There aren’t many Valentine’s Day themed games in the App Store, making My Love My Valentine fairly unique. It has decent graphics and a sweet theme, which will definitely get you into the Valentine’s Day spirit.
What I didn’t like: The gameplay is repetitive, slow paced, and has a tendency to become boring after just a few levels. At times it’s also hard to grab the small on-screen envelopes to drag to the bird, and I also had a few crashes while playing as well.
To buy or not to buy: If this game wasn’t Valentine’s Day themed I’d suggest skipping it, but since there isn’t a lot of selection available when it comes to Valentine’s Day themed games, it’s worthwhile if that’s what you’re looking for. Give it a try before you buy with the lite version.
