Apple iOS App Revenue More Than Three Times Higher Than Android

App Annie Index

App tracking service App Annie recently released its research index for the previous 2012 quarter and Apple is still on top with the highest revenue stream. According to the index, iOS apps are three-and-a-half times more profitable than Android.

The iOS App Store increased its revenue buy approximately 20 percent, while the Google Play store doubled its revenue during the same period. Even with the revenue increase, iOS still out-performed Android.

Games development companies appear to be the biggest moneymakers, although Apple and Google held the number one and two spots for number of downloads. Neither company makes games. With iOS 6, Apple began recommending new users download the company’s apps before getting started using their mobile device. This has obviously had an effect on downloads.

EA Games is the number one revenue maker with 958 games in the App Store. Interestingly, the number two spot goes to Clash of Clans creator, Supercell. The independent game maker only has two apps in the App Store. It is quite an accomplishment for the young startup considering they rank above Gameloft, Zynga, and SQUARE ENIX in app revenue.

Thanks to Apple’s App Store, you don’t have to be a big named game maker to make a big hit. If a two-game company can outrank the likes of Gameloft, it appears that iOS is the great equalizer.
