Any respectable gamer already has a Steam account. Valve’s game download service is like the App Store for full-sized computer games for Mac, PC, and even Linux (in beta). The iOS app has been available for iPhones for a while now. Last night, it received a major update, finally making it optimized for the iPad.
The Steam Mobile app allows users to access their account on a mobile platform. You can see what your friends are up to, and even chat with them when they are online. You can also browse titles by featured, popular and new releases. If you are looking for the deal of the week, check out the “Specials” section to see all games that are currently on sale.
Users can also read up on Steam news, like what this week’s Midweek Madness sale is, and find out about industry news, like product launches and game reviews from gaming websites.
If you find a game you want, you can either add it to your wish list, or purchase it from within the app. You can even see screenshots of games to see if you want to give them a try.
In addition to iPad optimization, Steam Mobile allows you to go offline from chat, but stay logged into Steam. If you are too busy sniping fools to have a casual chat with your buddy, or you told you teammates you had to hang with the wife when you really just wanted to play Triple Town, you can now hide your chat window so you don’t have to answer to anyone while you get your game on.
The app is free to download and available in the App Store today.
